# how do you remove powder coat?

The powder coat on bumpers I bought for my jeep 2 summers ago are flaking pretty bad and pissing me off. I want to strip them to bare metal and just spray them with bed liner so it’s easy to touch up next time i damage them. Whats the easiest way to get this stuff off? Will a chemical paint stripper do the trick or am I stuck grinding them?

grinding or special chemical removers which is pretty $$$$$
air craft paint remover wont touch it

advance auto has some stuff that that you spray on n it says it’ll take off most paints but it’s $35 so i want to know if it works before i buy it… or if there is something cheaper and known to work

Stiff wire brush attached to an angle grinder is what I’ve found to work the best.

I know Turbo used aircraft stripper. It worked amazingly well but it took a few coats.

I tried a grinder on some faulty powder coat that a guy did for me and all it did was melt and spread it around. I had a little better luck with a flap disc.
In the end I just got the big flakes off and bed lined over it.

thanks for the first suggestion… asshole! I already did search google but figured i’d ask LOCAL people what they used and know works so I can go the same route with my project.
I actually may try the gasket remover since i think i have a can laying around.
I might do a “what works best” thread with brake fluid, gasket remover and a can of paint stripper if i feel ambitious tomorrow.

Isn’t there a rumor that gasoline will remove powdercoat? I was always extra cautious at the pump after I heard that. Even though I’m not sure if there’s any truth to it…

There are several different kinds of “powdercoat”
Just like somebody asking…how do i remove this “paint”. There’s Epoxy, Latex, Enamel, etc, etc… Different powdercoats have different properties and how they can be removed are different. One chemical could work while another one won’t touch it.
- Chemical dipping is the easiest, but not the cheapest.
- Paint Strippers can work
- Sand Blasting
- Bake it off in a furnace, then blast.
The last time i needed powdercoat stripped it was my brake calipers. I took them to Skunks house and told him it was a machined penis. Came back the next day and he had dry humped the coating off. Didn’t cost me anything either.

Gas does not remove powder coating, ive had gas sit on varios PC parts before to no ill effect
