It’s more pronounced at my age. When I went to get my BA/BS, it was not nearly as common.
But, yes, it is very true. Going to get a BA/BS is much more common now than 10 years ago, 20 years ago, 30 years ago, etc. Any retard can get into a 4 year school and get greased through without doing much work.
It makes it much more difficult to differentiate from another potential employee.

Yeah I’m sure, but still the majority of mid-level jobs require a BA/BS or some serious experience.

I think you mean that now a BA/BS is the same thing as a HS diploma from before, because everyone is getting them. Too much focus and attention has been placed on going to college which has essentially devalued the degree. I get annoyed when I meet random morons who graduated from UA, because it reflects poorly on everyone else who has gone there. It seems that now you really need a Master’s to set yourself apart from everyone else, unless you’re in a specialized field.

+1. IMO, only 4 year degrees in a science hold any water these days. Any idiot can bullshit their way through just about any comm/english/history/economics/etc major. It makes it hard for the really bright people that want to work as a businessman or comm specialist or whatever to get taken seriously.

I have a BS in Interdiscplinary Engineering and Management with a Concentration in Project Management from Clarkson University.
I’m really considering going for my MBA at some point in the near future, or possibly my Masters in Engineering.
The sad thing is that I really can’t say I learned much from my four years at Clarkson that I apply to my daily job. I work in the construction/civil engineering field and it seems like all college turned out to be was a big test, to filter out those who don’t have the drive, determination, and intelligence to tough out four years of engineering school.

Any 4 yr degree is borderline useless. 4 yr science degree qualifies you teach highschool…after your masters in teaching. And disagree about the economics one, the dropout rate in mine was as high as many engineering programs. Business admin however is a cakewalk on par with comm/history/lit/etc. $.02. 🙂

Now that I think about it, you’re right. Almost any 4 year science degree you need to go on to med/grad school to really use. I won’t say all 4 year degrees are useless though. I was a CS major and I am actually doing something with it, as are all but one of my CS classmates (and he was just an idiot). There has to be a few other degrees that hold the same ‘value’ after college too.

Unless your coming out with a specialized degree (BSN, PA, any engineering degree, economics) then a 4 year degree is useless except to get you into a graduate program. I work as a pharmacy technician at Albany med, many other techs have 4 year degrees and are doing nothing with them.

I think useless isn’t the correct word to describe it. Some BA/BS degrees are cake to get, and lots of people have them, but that doesn’t make them useless in the sense that no-one should bother getting one, rather everybody should get one and then continue on to their masters which should be the emphasis in modern times for what is considered higher education.

Agreed, useless isn’t the right word. Education is education, and going through school teaches you lots of things, whether it be in the classroom or outside. No one can take that away from you regardless of whether or not you use your degree for what it was intended. My field is all about who, not what, you know, and some of the most succesful people in my industry are high school grads who just worked their way up through the ranks coming right out of HS. Now, though, you can’t do that anymore. Most people won’t hire you without at least a BA, which is why that has become the new HS diploma.

When I say useless I mean it doesn’t put you out ahead of anyone. It doesn’t make you more desirable to an employer as it used to. Today, a 4 year degree is ‘required’ like high school is.
