# How To make your own Boost Controller

this was Gus Mahon’s design (R.I.P.) and is probably the best manual boost controller (mike has one that rivals it) you can buy/make.
i take no credit for this, but it gets 2 :tup: from this guy
first you need the parts.
go to [McMaster-Carr.com](http://McMaster-Carr.com) and get these parts
48935K25 - 0-20psi valve
44555k142 - 90\* barb
5346K51 - brass barb. they only sell them by 10, so pop into home depot or hectors.
Here’s how you make and adjust it:
To make the valve, move the check ball to the other side of the spring.
Then screw on a brass barb fitting
Drill a tiny hole (about .020") in a brass barb first
(you can get these at the local hobby shop)
Then bang the barb into the hole with a hammer. It should be in there really tight!
Then assemble the whole thing, and the finished product looks like this.
boost should flow in the straight barb, and our the 90 to the wastegate actuator.

these MBC’s are actually pretty damn good. The only real reason (other than being too lazy to get out of the car and fuck with it) to go electronic is gear specific boost control.

Yeah but gear specific is only available on higher end models…for 5 bux in parts you really cant beat reliablilty of MBCs

did he use the granger valve? it is very IMPORTANT that you use that valve. it uses a 0-20psi spring… not some “i pulled it out of my bic pen” spring, or “it used to hold up my garage door” spring. i have used shitty MBCs with springs that were too heavy to adjust boost any less than 5 psi at a time.

used one on the GN long time ago, it was ok.
it worked well over 25lbs tho, where the stock one was bleeding off.

i just finished installing and adjusting it. it works GREAT on the slaab!
the spring is so soft each full turn is only like .5 psi. so its really simple to fine tune.

I wonder how well this would work on the EVO…
Wouldn’t I need to start with a bigger valve since I am running at 20psi already?

I have the forge unos currently and I am really not that happy with it, just to let you know. No matter what spring I run or combination of turns/adjustments the thing is all over the place with all of the weather changes and crap. I have a feeling the Ball may be sticking inside of my forge. I need to grease it and maybe that will fix it, but overall I think I would be happier if I bought a Hallman in car adjustable or an EBC to start. Or just use an ECU reflash to control the boost for now. Just thought I would share. Later

I have heard sotries of the Forge’s sticking. I thought that just yesterday I read a post about it, and that they recalled them or something because of that… Maybe do a search on [evolutionm.net](http://evolutionm.net)?
I am thinking of getting rid of the Greddy Profec Bspec II and going with the Hallaman w/ ceramic ball. I really like my Greddy, even though I had to get a PHD in Astrophysic’s to set it up, but I might do a Hallammmamamaamn.
My Greddy is just as bad in the weather as I would assume a manual would be. Last week I had the Greddy set to 51% duty cycle of the solenoid (20.5psi) and I had to change it this morning to 48% because I was spiking at 23psi.
Speaking of reflashes, do you have one already, or are you getting one? I will probably be doing this really soon, and was thinking of asking Mike if he would like to have Al Friedman come to his shop and maybe do a North East Coast reflashing party at Innovative… (Mike: Hint!!)
