# How would you go about removing this bolt?

2003 Raptor 660R, chain adjustment bolt, very rear of the swingarm. the head of the bolt has been sheared off, it’s flush with the surface of the swingarm (which is aluminum). the bolt is some sort of steel, no clue what kind.
i removed the center carrier bearing with the thought that i might be able to see better inside and maybe access it, but you can see that there is little to no room available to put anything in there. i was thinking maybe a flathead screwdriver and a hammer, light taps on the edge to try to rotate it?
the smarter option i am guessing is to drill and easy out it from the top. looking for input from you guys.

Can you grind a slot in the top and use a screwdriver? Did it shear off because it is seized? I would think heat has to be used in some way if it is seized.

I would center punch the remainder of the bolt then drill into it and easy out. Take your time and get it as centered as you can.

Tell me about it. I see why they did it though. All steel swingarm is too heavy, aluminum bolt is too weak. I think a threaded steel sleeve would have been a better idea.
I will try easy out first. If that fails, ill grind a slot. Problem with a slot is that the bolt is recessed about 1mm so I’ll have to cut into the swingarm.

Take it to a machine shop, Klispie in Hamburg, and have them EDM it out. Took some of Jellers stuff there and it came back like it never happened.

Not happening in a million years. I witnessed first had with Jeller’s uprights what a nightmare it is when aluminum and steel corrode together. Never would have believed it if I didn’t see it with my own 2 eyes.

turned out okay. i tried to drill the bolt but ended up snapping the drill bit in there. finally got it out and said fuck it, drilled the entire hole larger to 5/16" and tapped to M10.

Stupid audi, Steel bolts in aluminum control arms, in the wheel well of the car. Thanks again for doing that Mr. Krant.

This would have come right out with the correct SMAW welding rod the correct sized nut and washer

i threw in a test bolt to see if the threads were okay after tapping, they are. i need to buy a correct length bolt tomorrow. i’ll put anti seize on. problem is, the swingarm is obviously subjecto to all kinds of water, mud, crap that will fuck it up

SMAW (Arc Welder), they make special rod to remove broken bolts. The flux on the rod protects the aluminum and threads in the hole when it melts. You pretty much put a washer on top then a nut and then you fill up the center with weld. The heat works to break the bolt loose and then you just put a wrench on top and remove the broken bolt, washer nut assembly. Much cheaper than wire EDM cutting

I’ve had a raptor, I know how those parts get fucked up, I would go through 2-3 sets of rear brake pads a season!
But I wouldn’t expect the anti-seize to wash away. If you are really worried you can use loctite or thread tape maybe? Anything to prevent the galvanic corrosion.

Why did you burn through brakes like that? I only use mine when i have to stop in an emergency. Trying to teach myself to use both axles to stop to keep it balanced.

Who knows, lots of mud I guess? ebay pads? idk. It was a while ago but I know I changed them twice for sure and I had it a year or two

This stupid cunt I know has no idea how to ride and bought a raptor 700, she thinks the brake lever is a foot rest. I refuse to work on it. Every bolt on it turn out like this when I was doing the rear carrier bearings.
