but really, I think the real purpose of the pledge is to give little kids something to do in the morning… something to memorize. something they can feel special about knowing. I’m sure none of them really know what they’re pledging.

It doesn’t do that though. It fails at it. Kids need to conform to some standards, but not saying the pledge. Lets use the time to teach them actual manners–something that they can use with them throughout life.
