update:
I need to get yet another set of new wheel bearings put in the new DSS hubs and then we’ll be good to go. These axles look bombproof.

What are other people who are making more power running?
Are they having the same problems?
Perhaps the problem is not in the power but the driveline angles?

It was my buddy that broke his on the same night at TMP. His WRX wagon runs 12 flat, he was also running an upgraded axle from DSS
The track was glued huge that night and I was slipping my clutch more than usual(burning more like it) just so I wasn’t the 3rd axle victim of the night.

Yea people constantly break the rear bars. Then you upgrade the bars and sometimes break the CV, other times still the bar. With the stage 5 setup I should be alright.
The axle is basically parallel to the ground while drag racing so the angle isn’t an issue. Rally guys tend to tear up bars and CVs due to the extreme angles they experience. I sheared the upgraded bar in half. The CVs and splines that engage the CVs are all in perfect shape.
On the street STi axle failures are VERY rare and I haven’t had it happen to any of my customers. It’s pretty much a launch only issue for street cars. The Targa STi we worked on and tuned blew an axle at Targa last year starting a stage and he only has a 16g turbo. Anyone launching with a good amount of torque that gets good traction will snap the bars.

I think this is the breakdown:
Normal street tires on the street, no crazy launching (600 whp or less) - OK
Normal street tires autoX drag style launch (500 whp or less) - Should be fine.
R Comps at autoX drag style launch - around 400 lb/ft you will have a problem
Normal street tires at drag strip - Around 400 lb/ft of torque with a good launch or 350 lb/ft with an abusive launch the clock is ticking. It probably won’t happen the first several times at the track but it will happen at some point if you launch hard, slipping or not.
My combo of sticky tires plus over 400 lb/ft of torque plus 2 step launch at the drag strip = show up with DSS stage 5 or don’t show up at all 🙂

DSSS stuff looks nice.
You sure your not getting any control arm or rearend deflextion. I dont know your bushing set up, but is it kinda a older car. Limiting the sqarting will help to, im sure you know. My gtp knolage all axle breaking problems were solved keeping them aliened. Stocks hold up to 1.3 60’

My car doesn’t squat a lot due to the extremely stiff 50mm rally coilovers I’m using for now. They were stiff on my legacy rally car and they’re extreme overkill on this one, but they’re what I had around and that’s how a lot of this car got put together. They’re not the best for a road course but they counteract squat really well.
The whole rear subframe, control arm, lateral link setup etc. is from a 2001. They’re in good shape as are the few bushings back there. I upgraded the rear diff/crossmember bushings with hard poly. On a Subaru everything stays lined up nicely in the rear when you’re drag racing. The rally guys do tend to have issues throwing the car through a turn in a ditch where the axle angle gets extreme.
That said we’ll probably replace the lateral link bushings over winter and the other 2 for the rear diff mount. As it is the diff barely moves though.
I have upgraded engine and tranny mounts plus tranny member bushings so the whole driveline is pretty well contained. At some point I’d like to get a CF one piece driveshaft to round it out.

cool,
hows the contraol arms for keep spindles form moving front/back. If you ever get the car on a dyno you can look. My wheels moved forward like 2inchs in the wheel wells. it was crazy, but its was designed for smooth ride. lol

Yikes! On a dyno the wheels on a Subaru don’t move forward/aft to the eye, but I’ll have a look when we get some video of the car launching at the track. A hard launch will be a lot more likely to move things around, so we shall see.

The stage 5 gear is in and I test drove it. I could get on it as 4th gear spun like crazy on the damp road, but it seems ready to go.
I may be hanging out with my kids instead of racing Sunday since my wife is working out of town. We shall see…

I did arrange a sitter for a few hours Sunday. That was enough time to drive to the track, shear my wheel lock key on the second lug, and drive home. ☹ Bad luck owns me at the drag strip.
