> the ones at the track were almost certainly 996s, probably all garbage C2s that had been running quarts low, too. try to imagine people who can’t keep 5 quarts of oil in their subaru like they’re supposed to. now try keeping 12 in, and all 5 fuel pumps (I know there are 5 in my turbo) going properly as well. I can almost guarantee that at least 3/4 of the 996 failures that had bad seals had help from improper mainteinance. but, those are 996s. that’s why no one should touch a 996 without a turbo.

5 fuel pumps, what are you trying to say here?

So wait are you going to put a LS1 in this when the motor blows?

internet horror stories are enough to spook people away from them, but, for real, they’re no good.

you can buy one, tear it down, put a new bearing in, and hope that nothing ever happens. but, what will actually happen is you’ll never drive it, and when you do, you’ll be scared of it blowing up, and you’ll constantly be looking in the rearview for blue smoke. “when’s it gonna go?” will be in the back of your head, all the time.

Porsche fucked up, they designed a housing for a bearing that actually kills the bearing itself… they made the bearing race stud out of a tin can. simple solution: don’t buy one, don’t even look up how much they go for.

again, though, Xander, great pick up. can’t wait for the summer time.

Porsche designed these motors using a sealed ball bearing that is pressed into the intermediate shaft (Figure 6). These types of bearings are typically used in things like copy machines and other machinery used in dry conditions. In theory, the area where Porsche designed the bearing to sit is supposed to be dry. However, after years of use within the engine, it would appear that oil and contaminants from the engine seep past the bearing seal, wash out the original lubricant and become trapped inside. The result is that the bearing now operates in a less-than-ideal environment and begins to wear prematurely. When the bearing wears out, the timing chains on the engine may disengage, and the engine will quickly self-destruct. When the bearing does begin to deteriorate, foreign object debris from the bearing circulates throughout the engine, causing damage to other areas in the engine. This appears to be one of the most common failure mechanisms present with the Boxster and 996 Carrera engine.

I was thinking something rotary…LOL

The good thing in all this is that I am not a baller on a budget, and can afford to buy a new engine for any of my vehicles. So despite the overwhelming concern of certain NYSpeed members, I’m gonna be just fine 😉

Best way to do that is sell mine and spend the extra $$$ for a turbo, but I’ll try the lower budget route first.

Good post  Interesting read. I would guess that the aftermarket has pounced on this and you can repair the engine correctly with a new HD bearing and seal?
