if the car came from the factory equipped with an airbag, then yes it does have to have it equipped and working. If it came without an airbag then no, it doesn’t need one. Im pretty sure cause I remember the show pimp my ride got it trouble because they removed an airbag from a steering wheel and replaced it with a monitor or something like that

It’s illegal to have a mechanic remove the airbag for you.

It’s legal to do it yourself.

you can’t resell the car without ALL the OEM saftey features on the car and in working order… so if you plan to keep it, go crazy… thier is NO law saying that you MUST use airbags, personally they are a great for side impact but 4 point belts are the safest front imact devices thier are… but ma and pa mid west US won’t go for 4 point belts so it’s scary ass 3 pointers and airbags that splinter bone into your brain…

I’m pretty sure the dealer can legally dis-enguage an airbag, due to the leathality involved with certain passengers. under 80lbs?

If selling the car, it just must be made known to the buyer.

you can actually get your airbag removed from the dealer and have the paper work signed by the minestry so that it shows your car is no longer equiped.

that beign said any subsequent sale of the car can be done with out any fear of having an illeagal air bag mod…

nice to know but i dont think its cheap.
