# make your own torque strap

Make your own Torque Strap!
If you’ve ever had an engine mount break upon hard acceleration, you may be familiar with the damage it can do. The fan can hit the shroud, and the air cleaner can come up and smack the hood.
You can prevent this, and take stress off the drivers side mount, by installing this simple device. A torque strap connects the engine to the frame, and keeps the engine from rocking over under acceleration or launch. Preloading the turnbuckle at the strip creates a “solid motor mount” effect in that it takes the stress off the rubber engine mount, which absorbs energy, and instead directs more energy to the wheels.
You can pick up a 8-10" turnbuckle from any hardware store. While you’re there, get some Grade 8 nuts, bolts, and washers. You’ll need to fab up a steel “L” bracket as shown below. Attach one end to an accessory bolt hole in the drivers side cylinder head, and the other end connects to the sway bar frame mount. You may need replace the stock sway bar bolt with a longer Grade 8 piece.

seriously man…a better L bracket needs to be made for that thing it’ll bend easier than anything.

best tq strap ever. ratchet strap over bolt thru block and into frame. thats how i kept the headers from hittin the steering column in the sonoma.

my stock one broke… so i just went down the store and got some cut your own thread, nuts, and a peice of plumbing pipe, and started welding shit together… im surprised it works as good as it does…
im going to make a new one with thicker thread tho, and clean it up better, this was just a temp fix but works good and stiff

on fords what i do is use stock motor mounts. and box the sides in with plate. Great for daily drivers since there is still rubber to absorb flex. and not harsh as solids on the street

just use chain… you can put a longer bolt in the bottom and just tighten it at the track and loosen it on the street…

should your engine have enough torque to damage a healthy motor mount, that L bracket won’t even make it think about not moving.

Drill hole thru the motor mount, put bolt with a nylon lock nut. Don’t tighten really tight, just snug. Once you put the weight off the engine on the mount it will make it loose enough that it will not transfer vibration. Once launching it will tighten up and keep the engine from popping out of the engine compartment.
