Edit: Going to try to find another source for this. But in anycase it’s quite ironic to see a majority of gun owner forum members say that this was no time or place to use a gun, most would have ran out and pointed guns at the exit where they could have tactical advantage. But what the hell do they know… ---

Lets not break this down so much that it leaves everyone sitting in a room scratching their heads. The sad thing is, this could happen any time, any place, any day any minute, any second. As you read this, look around you and think like that physco “how would I break in this room and kill people?”. I am in a state agency building, walk right in the front door, hop on an elevator or take the stairs, laugh at the swipe badge to unlock the door, and just use the butt of the rifle to smash the window on the door out, reach in and open the door. You could have somebody in a tree on the side of the thruway at rushhour, picking people off in bumper to bumper traffic. Its fucking nutty out there. If its going to happen, like Wayne says you have a better chance at seeing Jesus to stop it preemptively. Government could get a giant electro magnet and suck every weapon out of the hand and houses in the country. Someone who wants to do this shit will make a graphite gun and plastic bombs and do it anyway. NO FUCKING WAY TO EVER STOP IT. Which leaves you with what I assume the fore fathers to our county must have also concluded… reaction is the only thing you have left, if your not dead already. NOT arming yourself, NOT taking the initiative to be properly trained, NOT attempting to do something no matter how big or small is 100% a sure fire way to NOT HAVE A CHANCE AT SAVING SOMEONES LIFE OR YOUR OWN. This concept doesn’t need to be any harder than that. ---

What if’s and and what nots cannot be assessed in this type of situation as you never know how you will react in these scenarios until you’re actually in one. So to go ahead and argue about what someone carrying would or would not do, or whether they could have stepped up and been a hero is completely subjective as you are not them. Personally I’d like to think that if I was in that theater with my family and was in fact legally carrying, that I would have done all I could to by as much time for my family to escape unharmed and shot that piece of shit in the face given the chance, teargas or not stranger things have happened. Everyone reacts differently in these situations. Arguing about subjective manners is pointless. ---

Being unprepaired to do anything but run from fear is the only sure way to gurarentee helplessness if god forbid your faced with that senerio. So, most “carry” firearms are .380, 9mm, .40, .45, etc. Unless someone was carrying an FN57 or a higher powered revolver (.44 mag, .460, and so on), had enough training to safely shoot in low light situations, was accurate enough to shoot the suspects face as most of his body was covered by body armor, and could do all that without getting shot or shooting someone elses kid in the process, then anyone carrying could’ve stopped the guy. Even a highly trained person under that much pressure basically shooting in the dark wouldn’t likely hit the target. ---

It doesn’t matter, he walked in pretty much knowing that no one else has a gun in there. Even if someone shot back and hit his armor it can knock him down. Or even if someone was shooting at him it would obviously draw his attention away from shooting random people and he would most likely shoot back, possibly sparing other peoples lives. ---

Many have different opinions on this. I can see both sides. I know where I stand as far as carrying. It requires restraint and some “level headedness”(sp.). As I know it and was taught in NYS, to carry a gun in NYS is “personal protection”. Nothing more. I was told that even if my “girlfriend,wife, etc.” was being mugged accross the street, it’s not our right to play hero. I understand the consequences but my opinion varies a bit from that. I’d only allow for a near death, point blank shot at a criminal, but it’d have to be a nearly guaranteed shot. Upwards away from people, ie. play dead on the ground. My restraint would be based on the situation. Home protection or loved ones are brought into the equation and unfortunately, my emotions would cloud my otherwise, forgiving judgement. Another arguement for a “home defense” thread. ---

One thing that doesn’t add up with him not expecting to be shot… is him wearing full body armor and not resisting police. Logically it would seem he actually expected to be shot in the theater since it’s the only place he wore the armor, otherwise why go through the trouble.
