We still have a payoff on the car that is fairly large. It is financed through GMAC. What are my options to sell it to a private party? Does it have to be paid off? Is there a way to transfer ownership and have him pay it off?

No, it doesn’t have to be paid off. The new owner would assume existing payments, plus the cost difference you ask for.

my cousin just sold a truck…

it had to be paid off before he could sell the car…so he paid it off then had to wait for the tittle.then sold the car…and it was finaced through GMAC also

i hope that helps…maybe pewter knows a little more than me…a loup hole or something…
