But I’m not that guy. My home entertainment system runs on wired gigabit lan and has more TB’s of storage than our shared storage here at work.
I’m all for applying too much technology for a bit of added convenience or wow factor but this is one of those places I just can’t see the advantage.

I love mine. I have the newer / thinner version. Sure there are ones out there that do the same thing, but none are as elegant of a design. It’s fish-eye look and weighty control mechanism really make you want to play around with it more than you need to.
Does it save me money? Probably not.
Just as a note, it has a built in battery but draws power / charges from your wires. The setup is stupid easy too. It comes with it’s own screwdriver and the bracket has a built in level so you literally need nothing to get it on the wall.

Yeah, not even close. I use my iPhone for all kinds of useful things that a non-smartphone could never do. Navigation, ski tracking, RDP etc. A thermostat is just a thermostat, Nest just added stupid features and easy programming for dumb people who probably also couldn’t set a VCR back when they had one.

I tried hooking up just a “fancier” version when I had my new boiler installed. Didn’t work with 70’s era original wiring.

I feel like it should still work, you only have 2 wires for heat only or?
red goes to R and White goes to W.

Lol you know what’s great about a normal t-stat when it fails. It gets cold and that tells you the furnace isn’t working. Better then cooking all your monkeys.

Tried every combination, no good. My installer told me after the fact they probably weren’t compatable.

All the T-stat really is is a switch. It just has power sitting at it until it calls for heating or cooling in which it closes a set of contacts and allows voltage to the furnace for heat or cooling.

No. It has radiant floor heating. The poolhouse has to stay at a minimum temperature so nothing freezes and bursts. It’s just heated to keep the building warm during November-spring

Right, but the distribution of content across all of your TVs requires the storage and bandwidth. If you take a simpler approach, it would be unusable. Simply put, your solution is RELATIVELY simple given the problem.
The thermostat problem doesn’t suffer those pitfalls, being comfortable doesn’t require a complex thermostat.

You don’t have to get up to change the temp
It’s constantly adjusting learning your patterns
It looks nice
You can change the temp remotely
I also don’t need a phone with more processing power than the first space shuttle but its nice to have.

Yeah, because I change the temp on my thermostat like I change channels on the TV. It’s set at 70 in the winter when we’re home and other than that it never changes.
Look, if the nerd in you just has to have this stupid toy go get it. Stop trying to justify it as useful though. I have like 4 different remote control flying toys at home right now (quadcopters, helicopters, planes). They’re toys, I don’t try and justify their existence just because I have a smartphone that actually is useful.
I’m just waiting for the ultimate irony of one of the cheap fuckers from the other thread who refuse to turn their heat on until December gets a $250 thermostat. 🙂

I like the idea of this, but considering temp. recovery times, and my irregular schedule, setting the house at 72 24/7 is working just fine. We tried the programming on/off, and it was about the same on my heat bills as leaving it.
Any other reasons to buy it? I’m kind of in the market for a thermostat
