Very cool F1 tech here:

Road car potential? Maybe some day.

looks like some of the vortech supercharger units but obviously exhaust driven instead of belt driven…

I’m confused by what he said towards the end of the video. He first says Mercedes moved the compressor away from the hot turbine where it will run cooler and require smaller intercoolers (makes complete sense), but then later says they moved the very hot compressor to the front of the engine which made the rear of the engine cooler. This allowed Mercedes to place the transmission closer to the engine.

The problem is the turbine is where most of the heat in a turbo is generated so how can he say that moving the “very” hot compressor makes the turbine run cooler? The turbine will be glowing red at race pace….

Can someone explain? Am I over thinking this?

I think he meant normally the compressor would be hot due to it’s proximity to the turbine.

the guy said it incorrectly, he was probably reading a script and didn’t catch it.

it also allows the overall package to be smaller compared to Ferrari and Renault engine packages…Mercedes is tearing it up this season for sure
