While I agree with you, and no, I would never have gotten out of the car, I was just throwing that out.

But here: What sounds better.

Officer, I pulled over to check on my car it was dark out so I had my flash light. 5 punks tried to fight me and because I was alone I had to defend my self in fear of my life so I used what ever I had to do to protect myself, my flash light.

OR:

Officer, I pulled over because these punks were following me, I grabbed my (baseball bat,knife,brass knuckles) because they were going to attack me. I know I did a lot of damage but I had to defend my self.
