Well I just did a nightmare of an engine swap on my dads suzuki esteem wagon the motor through a rod at only 130km we just got a 76km motor in it runs nice but now the transmission is not going into drive it goes into reverse and clunks HARD when i put it in drive neutral works so its not the shifter linkage…
it is full of tranny fluid it used to go in drive we pakred it for a while because we were waiting for a rad now after we popped the rad in it started happening

while on stands;
can you disconnect the linkage and verfiy the transmission is your problem? by shifting at the tranny?
or with the engine off and linkage disconnected move the tranny gear selector to verify throw and then reconnect and see that your linkage has the same throw?
just a thought…
