here’s the deal, i bought nerf bars for my car. (round side step bars) i went to put them on, which should have been pretty straight forward. i get under the car to find that some of the holes that were pre-drilled and threaded from the factory for this sort of thing, are stripped.

i was wondering if someone could point me in the direction a shop or someone that could either drill out and rethread the holes or come up with some sort of viable yet reasonable priced solution to this problem.

or, if i’m completely missing something, advice would be great too.

if it matters, it’s an '05 crv.

how did holes that were never used for anything strip out?

i’d love to know that myself. i did buy the car used, so either a previous owner had them and fucked something up, or they simply corroded beyond use over the past 4 years.

edit: looking at the mounting holes, they look like they, at some point, were threaded holes, not just holes.

Hmm, is the hole through a pinch weld or does it go into a rail? If the latter, the easiest solution I envision is drilling a fairly large hole in the rail that will clearance a nut, welding a nut to a plate then tacking the plate over the hole w/ the nut inside. I wouldn’t trust a threadsert in this application.

Though that doesn’t really help you, as it seems you don’t want to DIY. This might be something turbociv would do…

that sounds like a perfectly reasonable solution, i simply cannot do it myself because i don’t have the tools for that kind of job, even though it would ultimately not be a complicated task.

i know this shouldn’t be a hard thing to do, i guess i’m looking for a suggestion of a place that will do this without pulling my pants down on the price.

fwiw, the rest of the underbody isn’t showing signs of decay.

is their room to cut the old nut off? Then just get new nuts and nut and bolt it?

Or maybe drill out the nut and maybe get a longer bolt then nut and bolt it, either way is pretty simple if you can cut that nut off.

I’m betting it’s recessed in a frame rail.

I am 90% sure they are nutserts on those style CRVs. I know that is how the side steps are installed on 06+ ridgelines. you might be able to run a tap thru them and clean the threads up (I don’t know the thread). For replacement I believe you drill them out then there is a special toll to install new ones.

the girlfriend took my nuts a loooong time ago, buddy.

yeah, i’ve been driving this thing for a couple months now. no other future plans for this dd.

also, my friend’s dad had a lift and air gun so we got this shit taken care of. installation went a lot better with the car in the air and some real tools.

thanks for all the suggestions.

The only place that I know that has a nutsert tool is any Honda Dealership, they would probably charge an hour or two. but that might get costly, but most work flat rate so it could be a benefit for you, depending on who much a pain in the ass they are.
