And actually if memory serves:
air and acetylene: 2200C
oxygen and acetylene: 3050C
nitrous oxide and acetylene: 2955C

Nitrous oxide with hydrogen would be too hot for anything useful (you’d ionize the metal!)

Hydrogen and oxygen is about 2800C

Who is talking about using it as a torch? An open flame is commonly used to find the amount of metal in a substance (calcium in an analgesic tablet, zinc in urine, etc). Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy.

when i was in highschool my dad and i were preparing for a party we were having…filling up baloons etc. we always have welding stuff from the shop at our house so we can always do some work around the house. well, my dad brought me to the acet. tank and we filled up a baloon a lil bit…then put it over an open flame with a pool skimmer pole. poof.

so that was fun, lets try some more. bigger poof.
one more. oxygen this time too? ok. big poof, pretty colors.

more.

more, bigger poof and more colors. at this point my step mom walks away shaking her head, she doesnt like it at all but my dad an i are giggling like girls at a backstreet boys concert.

now keep in mind my dad has been a welder his whole life. since he was a kid in my grandfather shop…so he knows better than to do any of this.

so he asks me if i want to try a really big one. i say of course.

he fills it with oxygen first. and just like on all the other balloons the nozel isnt seating properly and we arent getting all of the gases into the balloon, it is just venting around us.

start to fill with acet. and all of a sudden there is a huge flash (we are in our shed ont he back of our garage which is like a lean-to) holy fuck i started to run and so does my dad. i cant hear a fucking thing. my face hurts, and all i can think about is i wish we hadnt gone for another balloon. my dad runs back to shut the bottles off, my step mom runs out and tried asking us if we were ok, but we couldnt understand. we couldnt hear at all.

now here is the best part. my dads shirt is in tatters. he was wearing an oxford shirt. blue and white stripes. they are about 1/16 inch wide and run vertical…picture what i mean? well all of the white stripes are gone. his shirt is all blue stripes from the bottom buttun to his shoulders where the shirt is still in tact. wall we can figure is that one of the gases was attracted to a dye or something in the white stripes. his body was slightly burnt, all in stripes as well. fuck thats funny.

but very dumb. do not attempt

oxygen and acetylene: 3050C

Yeah, I could definitely feel the heat, and there was a friggin shockwave! We created a freakin shockwave. Well, we are thinking that we are going to start smaller (Coffeecan) for now. Ill update. If I dont post at all for a couple days, presume i died trying.

You’re going to hurt yourself. I really think if you want to get into this stuff you should go to school for it. It is true that chemists \> chemical engineers when you consider the fun factor.

Although, really, figuring out the absorption spectra of toluene isn’t all that interesting. Oh well.
