> BMW puts the S55B30 motor on display in Detroit - 425 horsepower, 406 pound-feet of torque plus compression ratio, redline, boost, bore x stroke specifications
>
> Full article with photos: [http://www.germanboost.com/content.php?4222-BMW-puts-the-S55B30-motor-on-display-in-Detroit-425-horsepower-406-pound-feet-of-torque-plus-compression-ratio-redline-boost-bore-x-stroke-specifications](http://www.germanboost.com/content.php?4222-BMW-puts-the-S55B30-motor-on-display-in-Detroit-425-horsepower-406-pound-feet-of-torque-plus-compression-ratio-redline-boost-bore-x-stroke-specifications)
>
> > Ok BMW, this was pretty cool of you to do at the NAIAS (North American International Auto Show). Say hello to the S55B30, the motor that will be powering the upcoming F80 M3 and F82 M4. BMW already showed many of these details in a press release on the engine last year but real life photos of a motor that will be a staple in BMW tuning for years to come and specifications never hurt. As a reminder, the 3.0 liter direct injected twin turbo inline-6 has 430 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque (more than the previously reported 369).
>
> > The engine is also 22 pounds lighter than the S65 V8 and this is with fluids. The total engine weight is 452 pounds. The engine also revs to 7600 rpm. The compression ratio is a fairly high 10.2:1 and the same as the N55 inline-6 that sees duty in the 335i.
>
> > It is interesting to note that the bore and stroke are 89.6mm and 84.0mm respectively. Compare this to the bore and stroke of the N55 inline-6 which is at 84.0mm and 89.6mm respectively. That is not a typo, the N55 and S55 share the exact same 2,979 cc displacement although their bore and stroke figures are reversed.
>
> > BMW designed the S55 oversquare giving a bore to stroke ratio that is greater than 1:1. This allows for lower piston speeds at higher revs. The S55 develops its peak torque as early as 1850 rpm and maintains it until 5500 rpm meaning the oversquare design has not hurt the low end much (although the N55 hits peak torque earlier) and BMW has done a good job balancing high RPM power and low end punch.
>
> > BMW’s turbochargers are produced by Honeywell and generate 1.25 bar (18.12 psi) of boost. Will there be room to push the turbos past this level? Most certainly. The question will be by how much.
>
> > The downsides? The fuel tank is only 15.8 gallons. Why BMW continues to give their M3’s such small fuel tanks is anyone’s guess.
>
> > Enjoy the photos below.

well over $90k for a near fully optioned DCT F8X M3… if you add carbon ceramic brakes ($8,500) you’re into 6 figures before tax.

>
> > When the BMW M3 and M4 debuted on Monday at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, it was to much fanfare and excitement. At that time, though, we were missing a big piece of the M3/M4 puzzle - the price.
>
> > According to a report from our roundel-obsessed friends at Bimmerfest, the four-door M3 will star at $62,000, while the M4 Coupe is priced at $64,200. Those prices do not include a $925 destination charge. That’s a pretty significant jump over the $56,275 starting price of the old M3 Sedan and $59,275 starting price of the last M3 Coupe, although we’d argue that these cars should easily outpace their V8 counterparts in terms of overall performance. In other news, a six-speed manual will come standard, while the seven-speed M DCT will be an optional extra.
>
> > Bimmerfest also came up with a timeline for the M3 and M4’s arrival. We should expect the official announcement of pricing, along with the full order guides, released near the end of this month or in early February. Production will kick off in March, while customers will be able to begin placing orders in late April. We’ll get our first crack at both cars in June, with deliveries beginning later that month.
>
> > As for the validity of this info, we’re told that the source Bimmerfest spoke to is very well informed and that there’s every reason to believe this info. So, while this isn’t fact until it comes from the mouth of BMW, we aren’t prescribing any salt with this particular story.

for some guys this will mean a cheaper and better equipped car than the E9X.

even though the base price is higher; 19" wheels now come standard as does navigation and a few other things that were part of big optional packages on the E9X. Also, with the weight reduction and all the CF bits considered the base price is actually really good… for US buyers anyways. In Canada the base prices are about $9k - $11k higher.

here is the CDN ordering guide with the options etc.

spent a solid 30 minutes in and out of the F80 at the Toronto Auto Show yesterday; even demanded that one of the reps go get they keys so that i could put it into accessory and play with the idrive.

the car looks nice and tight in person. the front bumper is still a bit busy but the proportions overall are awesome. The fact that they cut 150lbs out of this thing is awesome…and then considering all of the extra standard options and new stuff available (carbon brakes for one) i think this is a nice step forward for the M3/M4.

one thing that blew my mind, on the idrive toggle, you can use your finger and draw on the top of it like an etchasketch instead of scrolling to letters or numbers when entering an address in the GPS… it’s fucking wicked.

Still though, gotta wait and see what they add to the 2016 model… waiting for the LCI upgrade and the competition package.

Hopefully this new twin snail 6 has the same super strong rotating assembly as the n54. Would be a shame if a fbo 335i/135i n54 poops on these like they do to e9x m3’s.

i was in a new 3 series (non-M) the other day and i’m really looking forward to seeing what software and coding options come out for this.

there are so many little features added and so many possibilities that a feature coding and performance coding (remote) session could change these cars 100%.

i’ll also take Chris Harris’s review to heart… it will still be a couple years before getting one though. they’re going to be so much better after a couple updates anyways. also, there is the speculation of the M2 coming out as well…

new F80 M3 dynos out at 424rwhp and 425rwtq… friggin SIIIQQQQ!!!

these things appear to be severely underrated. they are listed at 425hp/406tq

they are dynoing consistently at 50-60rwhp and ~120rwtq higher than the E9X M3 which would put it around 465-480bhp&tq and it comes in at about 120 - 180lbs lighter depending on spec.

it’ll be a couple years before I seriously look at getting one but i’m really hoping for a test drive in the near future.

this is EAS who is a pretty reputable place and have done 100+ E9X runs on that dyno. the comparative numbers posted are on the same dyno between E9X and F8X… same dyno, same conditions across hundreds of samples… albeit with only a handful of F8X dynos thus far.

either way, the delta is relevant.
