:tup: the FD was such a good design. All Mazda has to do is give the design a bit of a modern face lift and bump the power output to 350-400ish it would sell. Mazda has teased the enthusiast customer base with RX-7 concepts just like Toyota has teased Supra concepts for years.
Unfortunately if we see any of these cars released they will all end up like the New NSX as low production, over complicated $150,000+ super cars with hybrid drive-trains. I can appreciate those, but would prefer a standard gas powered $45-75K with a plain old N/A or turbocharged engine option.

No way it’s a rotary with emissions and fuel economy standards being what they are currently. They have some preppy 4 cylinders (I think they have a turbo variant for some SUVs) so it should be a solid FRS/BRZ competitor.

I’m definitely seeing some FD roots, would love to see a nice facelift on them in this new release.

^ This for sure. It would be really difficult to make a rotary pass the current emissions test. Well, short of taking the VW route and cheating.
Mazda is definitely doing something right. Every time I drive my wife’s CX-9 I’m surprised how much sportiness they were able to wring out of a 4400lb SUV. They moved up to [#2](http://www.nyspeed.com/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=2) on Consumer Reports best brands list.

Agreed. To me, its the most timeless, beautiful car of all-time.
I think if this new coupe is going to have a rotary in it, it will probably be some kind of hybrid setup. Using a single-rotor engine as a generator for an electric motor is not that crazy of an idea.

Last I read the 16x Renesis 2 had been mothballed but who knows. Another apex seal blowing motor would be a boon to the LS swap world. 🙂

It almost seems silly to spend money developing new internal combustion engines for passenger cars with Tesla’s (and others) advancement in technology. By the time they spend years developing it and spend years getting a return-on-investment in sales most cars will be electric.

all this has to be is a hardtop 2+2 miata with a V6 and Skyactiv and it’ll be awesome.
i wouldnt buy a mazda for myself but i had no problem recommending it to my sister today when she called me for car buying advice.

Looks nice! Hopefully they don’t blow it like the BRZ and stick some pathetic 200hp yawner of an engine in it. That hoodline looks very low.
