I started with a 250 and I have no regrets. I think a lot of this type of arguments all comes down to the idea that new riders tended to make more mistakes than experience riders, especially with throttle. Some would argue that if you are going to crash, you will crash if you are on a 250 or a ZX14; the fact is with a smaller bike, a small throttle mistake might give you a jolt, but the same throttle mistake on a ZX14 may be enough to loop it.
Obviously if you ride like an asshat on the road you are more likely to kill yourself even on a vespa.
People ultimately will get whatever they fancy, caution should be paid no matter what when you are new to riding; just need to be aware your margin of error decrease as the engine displacement increases.

Whatever has the biggest classes down here for racing. Going to a few bike days at VIR and/or Summit later in the year. Screw riding on the street, you guys are crazy.

If you go to California Skip Barber has a superbike school @ Laguna Seca and you get to use the KTM RC8.

I tend to talk my friends just starting out, out of getting that new R1 or gixxer because lets face it, everyone goes down at least once and its a hell of a lot cheaper to fix and older bike or if its just cosmetic to let it go. All I ask is for a season on the older bike and after they’ve tested themselves, they can get what they want. Also, I’m all about the gear- ATG/ATT, but my dads a MSF guy so that was beat into my head since I was 3. As for those I don’t know- let Darwin have his day and hope no one else gets hurt if Darwin wins the game.

> might as well take it slow and learn on the bike you intend on buying one day anyway, because each bike is different so either way you will have to relearn or alter what you learned on a smaller machine when you step up anyway. i know someone who got an R1 for his first bike. and still has it to this day, the bike has over 60k on it and hes still kicking. all the precaution will only take you so far. it comes down to fate. if youre gonna go down and die, you will do it on a ninja 250 or a ZX-14. you cant control that fact.
You can dig a hole in a ground with a spoor or a shovel but only one is a proper tool for the job.
Sure you can’t control that fact, but you can sure as hell make your odds better. For every guy that gets away with it on an R1 there are 5 that didn’t, you really think the odds are the same for the 250 crowd?
What does the amount of accidents I’ve had have to do with anything?

Yeah, but you stand a batter chance of walking away from an accident on a 250. Of course, it could be a correlation rather than causation, but I have yet to see someone getting stupid in traffic or on a highway with a 250.

Id ride a 250 much more like a dickhead than I would a 1000 lol. And I dont see how falling at 60 on a 250 is different than falling at 60 on a 600/750/1000…
