Apparently Nissan does not see the FR-S/BRZ as a worthy competitor:

> “Do we have any competitors [in the rear-drive sports car segment]?” Palmer asked rhetorically when prodded about the rumored small sports car. **“Are you talking about the Subaru (BRZ)? It was a car designed for a 50-year-old. It’s for a midlife crisis. That’s not what we do.”**

> **(from Nissan Press Release) IDx NISMO**
>
> > Many of the group of co-creators who were involved with IDx NISMO are people who grew up playing racing simulation games that feature cars of the past and from all corners of the globe. They had a natural desire to realize that virtual driving experience in a real car of their own.
>
> > Not limited to being inspired just by racing cars, IDx NISMO was born from a refined combination of the freedom to borrow liberally from memorable vehicles of yesteryear and the present, in addition to whatever was felt exudes “cool."
>
> > The IDx NISMO’s co-creation dialogue took the distilled heritage of Nissan’s basic box-shaped racing vehicles of the past and married it with various intriguing new details. This resulted in a car that appears to be timeless and moored in a place all its own.
> > Though IDx NISMO shares the overall length and height of its Freeflow cousin, the 1.8 meter width of the car is testament to its low, wide stance that emphasizes its sporty proportions.
>
> > One of the hallmarks of box-type racecars is speediness conveyed by a reverse-slanted nose. On IDx NISMO, this frontal design element is embellished by an aura of seriousness communicated by the use of carbon panels. Side mufflers provide a pleasing exhaust note. The car also has contemporary touches such as front/rear and right/left aerodynamic spoilers and lightweight 225/40 19-inch tires.
>
> > To meet the high expectations for a powertrain equal to the task of propelling such a formidable car, one proposal from Nissan’s engineers is the combination of a high-performance, eco-friendly 1.6L direct-injection turbocharged engine together with a sporty CVT with 6-speed manual shift mode and synchronized rev control. The result is no less than an appealing mix of racing heritage with the finest of modern know-how.
>
> > Scanning the interior reveals racing-inspired crimson alcantra seat covers that entice the eyes, complemented by Spartan-looking meters and gauges that animate the race-car ambience. The lustrous metal surfaces contrast nicely with the bright red suede trim that is augmented by blue stitching.
>
> > This machine’s soul-stirring design echoes the racing car imagery of the past united with the buzz digital natives get from the virtual world they know well.
>
> > That this car could result from co-creation dialogue alone exemplifies Nissan’s fresh approach to contemplating car design, and even kindles a fire in the hearts of people fond of the good old days of high-performance cars.

It being just a concept is what makes it tough to look at in some instances, some of their designs are so far out there and ugly.
I can’t decide, in some pics I like it, in some I don’t.

Confirmed, but not which one:

> Nissan has confirmed its popular IDx concept will go into production, with the rear-drive coupe slated for a likely 2016 release.

> Nissan announced the development at the Detroit motor show on Tuesday, confirming that one of the two IDx models – either the lifestyle-based Freeflow model or the high-performance Nismo version – would make it to production.

> Touted as Nissan’s answer to the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ the IDx concept is a rear-wheel-drive coupe measuring 4.1 metres long and 1.3 metres high (only 100mm shorter than the 86).

> Nissan executive vice president Andy Palmer told media there was no confirmation of which of the two concept models would hit production.

> “Don’t say that we won’t do both, but we will definitely do one of them,” he said.

> He went on to hint that the IDx might have a manual transmission, or at the very least, paddle shifters.

> Palmer said the styling of the production model would closely follow that of the concept cars.

> Automotive News
> January 20, 2014 - 12:01 am ET
>
> DETROIT – Nissan’s top global product strategist is bullish about the possibility of building the IDx concept car that recalls the long gone Datsun 510.
>
> But Nissan’s U.S. team isn’t so sure.
>
> Andy Palmer, Nissan Motor Corp. executive vice president responsible for global product planning and strategy, gives every indication that production plans are in the works for the compact rear-wheel-drive sedan. Palmer says a factory strategy exists for the project, involving plastic body panels on a lightweight frame.
>
> Speaking to reporters here last week, Palmer said the resulting car will fit into Nissan’s lineup as an entry-level sports car, priced below the current 370Z, in a bid to woo young buyers.
>
> But Jose Munoz, chairman of Nissan’s North America region, doesn’t see the Datsun-inspired IDx causing a showroom sensation.
>
> “I like it. I like the sporty attitude,” Munoz agrees. **"But I don’t see it so much as a model that would be a true revolution of our portfolio.**
>
> “It’s a car that maybe one day will see the light. But for the time being, we need to grow the business we have. I want to keep selling my Versa, my Sentra, my Altima, my future Murano, my future Maxima, my future Titan and my future Nismo models.”
>
> Detroit saw two IDx concept models – the IDx Freeflow and the motorsports-flavored IDx Nismo. Both caused considerable excitement when unveiled in November at the Toyota auto show.
>
> Fred Diaz, Nissan Division senior vice president for U.S. sales, marketing, parts and service, says he is not getting any questions about the proposed 510 throwback from Nissan’s retailers.
>
> “I’ve gotten very little, if any, comment about it,” Diaz says. “I think we still have way too much research and things churning to determine whether or not that will actually be good for the U.S. market.”
>
> **Pierre Loing, the automaker’s vice president for North American product planning, acknowledges that the consumer feedback Nissan received from the car’s Tokyo debut was “inconclusive.”**
>
> Loing says Nissan now intends to survey consumers at the Detroit auto show to see what they think of the IDx.

It’s supposed to be inconclusive! The only time you have consumers conclusively voting for a product without many voting against it, is when you release a boring, slightly evolutionary product…
