:mwahaha…it’s no 30R, but this is the custom 16G anti-surge 4" velocity inlet compressor housing I’ve developed for the rediculous bucking issue on the Evo’s. Been working with the boys @ Turbonetics on this black magic of a science and might have the ticket here. Final fix? I sure hope so, I’m sick of chasing this gremlin on these cars with this stock turbo.

NOTE…not completely finished yet in the second picture…

should be interesting… now the edge of the velocity stack will be trimmed to allow the stock style inlet to fit on it correct? thats a pretty nice anti surge cover for being a “home made” item. you gonna get some money from Turbonetics for this design?

Stock style yes, just not stock size… the stack will be trimmed and a 4", .125" wall tube will slip over and be welded for a straight OD 4" clamping surface. 3-4" reducer to fit the typical Evo aftermarket 3" inlets.

This type of work is what I commonly do(machine work/CAD) at the machine shop on my off days, just a first for an anti-surge housing. I won’t be seeing any funds from the big T as I pretty much used their technology and mathmatics to determine what to do on this particular compressor. It’s pretty much “black magic” as I was told from my connections, there’s no definitive right or wrong way to do this, just ways that do and don’t work to your advantage. Hopefully I nailed this one pretty close first(and only) time around :ponder

Prototyping is fun!

Well after 8 months of R&D, testing, and dicking around with this surge issue present on stock turbo-modified Evo’s I’m hoping this is the final result to ending it once and for all

All in the name of throttle response 🙂

For the time being until I’m 110% satisfied it works I’ll leave it as is, in case I need to make adjustments or re-machine something else. If it all works I’ll pull it back off for a day and maker her all pretty for the show folks. Not that you’ll really be able to see it anyway once it’s all tucked down below the myriad of stuff under the hood 🙂 This Sunday is that meet up at Moon and I have “at free will” dyno useage up there for testing and tuning purposes of this nature. Will know the results them 🙂

Yeah, with that inlet on the stock turbo I’d like to see 350+ wheel and zero surge. Before all my testing and adding in the “black box” we had the car at about 25psi and ~330wheel. After I had you adjust a few things according to the new bypass valve setup and bleed system the car is running at ~21 psi and about 300 wheel. No surge is the most important thing right now and that’s the whole purpose of this housing. Extra power would just be a nice addition to the mix. Compressor housing inlet can now flow about 8% more air across the CHRA rpm range, about a 9whp gain on it own with no other changes.

We’ll just have to wait and see! I’m brining my growler to refill as if it works it’ll be a well deserved 2L of beer intake :lol

I can’t figure out how to post a PDF file directly so I just did some print screen things of the dyno file

This particular pull was #3 or 4, not the final ones. We had a couple pulls towards the end near 320ftlbs but then heat soak started setting in and we just let it as is. I was so excited that the damn housing actually worked and eliminated most of the surge that I forgot to save the last few runs :runaway.

Craziest thing is this is the first 16g Evo that I’ve seen or heard of that put down a power curve like that running this kind of boost(~24 peak torque), It has a NA type power curve, pulling all the way out to redline. 16G’s tend to fall off above 5500 and dwindle down like the torque curve does on the sheet there. I am assuming that the 4" inlet and velocity stack play the role in this factor. Spool comes on just a tad later than the stock 16G, anti-surge kicks back compressor efficiency by about 3% and I suspect that at low boost pressures the anti-surge machining allows air to enter the compressor past the primary inducer at lower boost levels. Justin tipped in the AFR a bit to ~12.2 low end to induce a little lean spool and it helped a tad

We could definitely get more out of the car, but we always like to tune conservative and for zero counts of knock. add a pound or so more boost and lean her out and it would have made another 20 or so but at the knifes edge of detonation. If it had water injection we could definitely play alot more with timing and put the torque way up but that bumps Eric out of auto-x class and he doesn’t want to do stuff like that on the car. Pump gas N’ go.
