Agreed, but is the general population ready to legalize gambling? Buffalo can’t even open a casino downtown. If put to the voters I don’t think legalized gambling would pass.

It is the responsibility of the government to create and enforce the laws of this country. As long as gambling is still illegal it’s hard to argue against this bill.

Really? Can I run an ad in next week’s Buffalo News saying I’m having a 25k poker tourney at my house in Williamsville? According to this it’s illegal, so there isn’t much difference in the eyes of the law between a slot machine and a poker money game.

I like how you conveniently forgot #1 from my list of questions, the “where are you” one. When you’re at the Seneca Casino using your ATM you are in another country. It is considered soveriegn land, belonging to the Seneca Nation. While I don’t necessarily agree that giving the indians a block of land in the middle of a NY city makes it another nation, it is estabilshed law, passed by our elected officials, and backed up by court challenges.

The fact is that online offshore gaming is a loophole. Like most loopholes when a huge business is built inside it, the loophole gets closed.

This isn’t GW for once…this is the fault of the dinosaurs in congress/the senate. They do not even know what the hell the internet is…where is that video of the congressman calling the internetS a bunch of tubes…that was one of the sadest/scariest things I have ever seen. The fact that an person as ignorant as him make decision that affect my life worries me beyond belief.

edit: joe is on a computer that displays a website that is run from computers not in this country. So technically his actions are not occurring in this country

well, just to play devils advocate because I do think gambling online should be legal, would that be the same for anything else? Say a person was looking @ stuff online that was illegal in the US, but using a proxy thru a country where it was legal… wouldn’t that be the same thing? Or even buying stuff online from countries where something is legal, but not legal in the US?

again… alot of grey areas… not totally cut and dry

as soon as they gain possesion os said illegal products (or pictures if thats what you are hinting at) then yes, that stuff is then on their computer. If they are purchasing products that are illegal in the US then when they gain possesion of them it becomes illegal. This happens all the time with perscrip drugs and the such

Since this doesn’t make gambling online illegal…there is a loophole

US customers purchase E-chips from company A. The Chips can be used to buy any number of things, like credits @ a casino. The Chip company values their product and is willing to buy it back at anytime for nearly full price (3% re-stocking fee applies).

US customer pays off shore company A $103 for 100 e-chips (3% handling fee). Customer uses e-chips to buy casino credits. Play win. Cash out to e-chips, sell back to company A, take cash.

The banks and credit card companies are only dealing with company A, which does not take bets, it simply sells a commodity, that doesn’t even really exist. But hey, people will buy anything online…

So who wants to start E-chips Inc with me and make a few hundred million dollars?

not a bad idea actually… I saw something on discovery about Japan. They showed these “gambling” dens where you play for “prizes” (gambling for money is illegal there). Only you cash out for a certin type of coin/brick of metal… you bring it around the corner to another shop and trade it in for $$$

honestly though… isnt that the same as an e-wallet? Or would this be universal so you don’t really need an account per say (aka swiss bank account snky)… sort of like cash out at a regular casino?

Joe… i’m in… marketing genius here FTW!

It could make a shit ton. More likely though, the government will shut that down too. But you never know. The hardest part would be to ink the deals with the big sites (Party, Bodog, Stars, AllPro, BetUs, etc…) before any other companies do…

So if he’s looking at kiddie porn, just because it’s hosted on a computer in some other country it should be legal? As long as he doesn’t save any files to his computer it’s all good.

The internet isn’t some teleporter. When you surf a website in Russia you are not in Russia, you are sitting on a computer in the US, where all the laws of the US still apply.

you guys can still play online, it pretty much bands you from using your credit/debt card to use on poker websites.

All you will have to do it use a escrow account like neteller or Firepay to transfer funds back and forth.

but officer, i clicked on that link on accident i swear!!!

…

before you arrest me, would you mind giving me your advice on this all-in situation?

…

anyway, why is gambling legal in certain areas, such as casinos and for the lotteries… but not standardized across the US? i’m not a law/political expert, but i think the whole thing is a bunch of horse shit.

i’m pretty sure netteller and firepay won’t be allowed to accept CC/check/bank account payments for the sites either… same as my favorite IGM pay…

Why are you allowed to speed on racetracks? Why some guns legal but some guns not? There are exceptions to almost every law, and they generally deal with being regulated.

The online gaming industry WELCOMES US regulation, taxation, etc… PartyGaming made nearly $1 million/day in profits last year. PROFITS.

party is pimp… im sure the others are close behind… but fuck… i always took an educated guess that they were taking in about 2.5-3 mill gross a day… so a million profit seems possible from that. i mean, once the software is in place… all you have is overhead…

I bet they do. One problem, that most people in this thread are missing.

**Gambling is still illegal in the US.**

On that point, I agree that it should be legal. I’d love nothing more than to see a privately run casino bitch slap the Seneca Nation back onto the rez, and see US corporations running online gambling sites with tons of money going back into the tax base. But that one little sticking point… **gambling is illegal**. Want to solve this problem? Get organized and push for legalized gambling. Face it, anything short of legalizing it is just exploiting a loophole, which it is the government’s responsibility to close.

you’re still not gambling in the US. It’s NOT illegal to play poker, etc… online. The bill doesn’t make it illegal. They make it illegal for credit card companies and banks to deal with people who process money for online casinos
