# Paint Setup Recommendations

Nice, I’m really looking forward to your results! I just closed on our house a few weeks ago, so now I need to buy an air compressor and the entire paint setup! I have a unit heater to heat the garage but I’m worried about fumes igniting, so I might be waitng til almost summer when its warm enough.

My plan is to heat the hell out of the garage, then turn the heater off and spray. (Use a fan to vent the fumes) then once I’m done shooting, turn the heater back on and let the garage bake.

nice collection of stuff for your setup…only thing I have to say just because I’m not sure if you know it…but you don’t spray sealer unless you’re putting topcoat over it within the flash time. otherwise you’ll have to scuff it all over again. I recommend using a nice high build primer so when you’re ready to PAINT for good, you have a lot of material to work with to scuff yet keep a uniform color, then seal, color, clear all in a row in one setup (hence multiple guns). I’m up to 5 spray guns now, each for something different.
One for high build primer
One for sealer
One for color
One for clearcoat
one for detail sprayer (mini gun)

The Epoxy sealer/primer is because I’m probably not going to be able to work on the car for a while; possibly 12 months or more; and want to make sure all the bare metal fab work is sealed and doesn’t rust. I’ve done a lot of research and this is what a lot of people use/suggest to do. I’m gonna have to scuff everything anyways, because I still have to do all the body-filler work. I’m spraying PPG DP90LF; which is what a lot of people use both under and over the filler to create a moisture/sealer layer between the metal and filler material.
\*\*Not arguing, just basing this on my research on what to use to seal in the bare metal before filler; and this is the stuff everyone suggests; regardless of how long between this coating and final painting.

Trust me… I’m NOT looking forward to the post-storage scuff… that engine bay fucking blows to scuff already… the nooks, crannies, etc… I can see a case of beer or 2 just for this time in scuffing/cleaning the existing paint.:suicide::suicide::suicide::suicide:

I’m only shooting primer right now, I won’t be shooting color/clear for a while. Once I’m going to shoot those, I’ll probably buy another gun or 2.

Question too if I may.
Im sure you need a pretty big compressor to shoot an entire car but is it possible to shoot the hood of a car with a pancake compressor?

Not sure on the blocks/sanders/etc.
Me being me, everything I’m gonna buy is gonna be mid - high level stuff. (IE: the gun I bought).
Blocks will probably be the adjustable one with the removable metal rods; sander - I’ve already got a mini D/A for Christmas (2"/3" Chicago Pneumatic). Probably get a matching 6" D/A or an IR D/A. As for disposables, I’m a big 3M user, but have had good luck with Dura - Gold paper. As for filler, the Evercoat products are what most professionals use/recommend.

And the ONLY time I have any air supply issues is when I’m using the die-grinder non-stop, and even then it keeps up (with the die grinder running between 60-80psi), it just runs constantly.
Plus, if you catch it right, get a 10% off discount (USPS coupon), and 18 months no interest financing.
NOTE - it looks like the one you linked to will supply about another 1 CFM at pressures, so it maybe a little better; but for the price, I couldn’t beat the deal of the Kobalt one.

Did you paint with your conpressor yet? id love to save some money and get one like yours. Kevin Tetz from the paintucation/Eastwood vids says you need at least a 60 gallon 5hp. I probably won’t paint that often or even use air tools much, but I’d like to make sure I have enough cfm/air/volume.
If it goes well with whatever setup I end up with, I know my moms car needs to be completely painted as well… And its huge! '72 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible. I used to love the car a lot when I was little, so I’d like to have it looking nice again, one day.

I haven’t yet, but I will be shortly.
For the gun I bought - 13 CFM @23 PSI inlet is the max it needs; well above either compressor. (The Kobalt will do 13.4 CFM @ 40psi; the one you listed was like 14).
What is Focusinprogress shooting with? Might want to PM him on his compressor/this issue; he’s shot a lot of stuff, and does it regularly.
