# Parking Brake and 4 Wheel Disc Brake

Question for you guys. I regularly use parking brake everyday regardless where I park (flat or incline). So far, I’ve got no problems with my current and previous cars, which are equipped with rear drums.
I’m planning to sell my current car and on my next car, it’s equipped with 4 wheel disc brakes. Is it going to be okay if I continue with my habit of using the parking brake every time I park?
In the long run, is this habit going to help prevent the rear calipers from seizing, or the other way around (causing it to seize)?

Depending on the car there’s a good chance your parking brake is still going to be a drum, just a parking only dedicated drum inside the rear disk.
Regardless though, consistent use is always better for them than hoping once a year it isn’t seized when you go for an inspection.

I’ve used the parking brake on the Speed3 and Miata, both of which have discs on all four corners, and never have had any issues with siezing from using the parking brake. And no issues as far as the brake causing claipers to sieze.
You have nothing to worry about in my opinion.
But yes, consistent use is certainly better than just hoping it will work that one day when you go to use it on a San Francicso incline hill.

I’ve always used the e-brake every single time I park with my manual vehicles that I’ve owned with both disks/drums and never had an issue. That’s also winter/summer driving and putting a TON of miles on.

To JayS: That’s interesting. I never actually thought of that. Any example of a car that’s equipped with such brake?
My next car is going to be '05 Subaru Legacy 2.5 Ltd. As far as I can see, I think it’s a proper 4 wheel disc brake system. The current owner just had it fully serviced. All four pads and rotors were replaced on the last inspection. So, I don’t want to foul it up once I own the car.
Cool, so, the concession seems like to keep my habit of using the parking brake. The only time I don’t use it is when I’m on vacation and I leave the car parked in the garage for 1+ week. In this case, I just park it on flat surface and don’t engage the parking brake.

2000 Ford Expedition
2005 Pontiac GTO
2007 Nissan Murano
^ The last 3 cars I’ve owned had rear disks that had parking brake drums.
The only car I’ve personally seen with a parking brake that activated the rear disk was my 86 Fiero GT. That system never worked right either.
That Subaru has a part listing for a parking brake shoe, so I’d say it’s a rear disk with a parking brake drum:
