WHAT POLICE DRIVE

When it comes to cop cars, the Ford Crown Victoria remains the dominent choice of law enforcement. Both Chevrolet and Dodge seek to change that.

**Dodge Charger**

Engine: 3.5-liter **250** -horsepower V-6 **or** 5.7-liter **340** -horsepower V-8

Transmission: Five-speed automatic

Drive wheels: Rear

Alternator: 160 amps

Passenger volume: 120.2 cubic ft.

Safety systems: anti-lock brakes, front seat airbaghs, traction control, electronic stability control, emergency brake assist

according to Wikipedia, the Dodge Chargers that the Ottawa Police Service uses aren’t the ones with the Police Package 340hp V8 Hemi engine, they just have the base V6 engine, so they’re less muscled than the V8-powered Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptors.

**Ford Crown Victoria**

Engine: 4.6-liter **250** -horsepower SOHC V-8

Transmission: Four-speed automatic

Drive wheels: Rear

Alternator: 200 amps

Wheelbase: 114.6 inches

Length: 212 inches

Passenger volume: 106.4 cubic ft.

Safety systems: anti-lock brakes, front seat airbaghs, traction control, optional ballistic door panels, optional fire suppression system

Both Ford and Chevrolet specify P225/60R16 Goodyear Eagle +4 Radials for their patrol cars. To handle the hard corners, ditches and curbs all suspension components are heavy duty. Springs are stiffer, shock absorbers are stiffer and larger and stabilizer bars look more like pieces of gas pipe hung below the axle or control arms.

at my last job in a body shop, i drove the impalas, crown vics and intrepids on a regular basis. the impalas werent much faster then a stock impala, but they actually have a functional front strut tower bar as well as a floor pan made of thicker guage sheet metal for extra chassis regidity. they do handle quite a bit better then the stock impalas.

the crown vics are quicker but handle badly. the seats have no side bolsters or lateral support at all which makes them even worse.

there arent many intrepids, and the cops dont really like them for some reason. I quit my job before the chargers came out so i have never driven one.

it is theoretically possible to escape the back seat of an impala with a 10mm socket. the seat backing is only held down by 1 or 2 10mm bolts. once they are out of the way, the seat backing comes off revealing the trunk. if the trunk is empty, you can get to the child safety release latch (yes it is retained) and open it from inside.

^Lmao at the escape plan. I’m sure the cop would shoot you the moment he sees the seat loose.

Regarding to the cop cars, they arn’t that fast or good handling. There was actually a magazine testing out cop cars against street cars.
Impala, Crown Vic, Charger vs Lan Evo 8, and Miata.

The track was basically a closed off street course with normal street turns and plenty of straights.

The results? Miata killed all 3 cop cars in that time attack. Lan Evo… well you should know. 8 seconds faster than the slowest cop car. Miata was I think 3 seconds faster than the fastest cop car.

Keep in mind the cop cars have a shit load of weight due to bulletproof doors, weapon in trunk, equipments, etc.

Oh, crown vic may seem weak with the 250hp, but it’s packing 300tq! watch out for that…

At the end of the article, a cop was like “Some cars may be faster than us, but they’ll never beat a Motorola”.

3.9 impala is only in the new ones isnt it?
base 3.8 (which is in older impalas) only have like 180hp

my last car was a 2002 black impala, cop car, pritty good cars, accel’s fast to a certain point. Suspension was very nice, easy for hard cornering and such, but basically same engine technology from lets say a 1997 grand prix, step on the gas pedal all the way and would build up power for a sec, then throw you back in the seat, wich even our 2000 pontiac montana does, GM cars all look different but have the same engine soud, accel type, and all. Thats why they are so boring.

don’t know about the new gen of vehicles 2007 plus.

That would be the my ‘fun-car’ if I were ever rich…

- Tint out all the windows. slap on some solid-looking steelies, wear some shades, and from the rearview mirror, everyone would think you’re a cop, and move over to the side of the road when you honk at them!.. More fun would be had if you had a PA system connected, and have a little fun ‘Gumball’-style… 😃

yea true, not having driven a regular impala i really won’t know the diff, i was impressed with the power or the accel of the impala i had, though i sold it, because everywhere i went people didn’t want anything to do with me they all though i was a cop.lol…i don’t know about others but i always got no complements from the female side…guys digged it.

only the best thing was, my impala was black, and had tint, and knowing through my own experiance when ever people saw the impala headlamps in the rear view they quickly moved to the right lane, some even in a hurry almost hitting another car…but i didn’t abuse my power.lol no seriously, because i would get looks from police cars too…DUH…they were looking at an unmarked police car with no communication.lol

i might have a pic of it…
