# Porsche 944 debate?

Okay well I have a 1984 Porsche 944. Its basically stock. During the summer my clutch and rear end took a shit on me. I also have to have a timing belt job done on the car which I have been told is expensive. Although I put the clutch in, my motor has 95,000 miles on it and Im worried about have to have it rebuilt soon. So I got the idea from my friend who owns a 240 to swap my engine with a sr-20 or if I cant find that Id prob. swap a KA in. Please help me idk if this would work out and be cheaper in the end but Im going to have around 4 to 5 grand this summer. If Im wrong please point me into a diff direction. thanks for the help! Would I want to swap out the tranny too? Im a novice wrencher so I would prob have to get this job done somewhere

Have fun adapting to the transaxle, or better yet, keeping the transaxle from blowing apart, or even better, putting a standard transmission in there, fabbing a new tunnel, fabbing a new rear subframe, and fabbing up a way to get a differential in there, and then getting custom axles made to match the outer splines.
Basically what I’m saying is it’s a dumb idea and you should buy a 240 if you want an SR.

If you are a novice wrencher then stick to novice swaps.
The 350 swap is a bit more then novice but it will probably be the cheapest way to make good power in a 944.

Ya it was just an idea. I might try to swap an ls-1 in it but I still have to find a place close to Buffalo to do it for me. Have any ideas where to take it?

A complete Renegade swap will run you closed to 10k not 4-5k. 4-5k is a good budget for maintenance for a 944. You aren’t going to make that car fast for any small amount of money. Trust me.

why do you think the motor is going to blow up? my buddy sold his with 220k on the original block, tranny, and rear end
just drive the fucking thing, get the major service done every 100k and quit losing sleep over it
edit: how old are you? if you still live at home take that 5 grand and invest/save it in something, you can always take a little out of it and have some fun tho =)

J&J is a good local source for engine building/swapping. Also Carnut (not sure if he is doing new projects right now) and a few others.

One more thing; if you are going to bother at all use a 1986 944, the older interiors are hidious but the newer ones are somewhat timeless.

I kind of want to sell it to get a newer 944. But as of right now I am going to have to put a ton of money to get it running good again. The interiors on the newer 944s are much nicer. And Im going to have to spend alot to get it running again that why I was thinking about just taking out the 2.5 but ya if a swap would cost that much Im fine with the power of the 944.

Actually some one did come over my house to buy the car but I couldnt let it go. My grandpa just died and he wanted me to rebuild the car so bad so Im gunna keep it. He even offered to help me with the swap cuz he was a mechanic and he even offered to help me with some of the expenses but now obv. that aint gunna happen
