# Power Steering Q

Vehicle - 99 F250, 4x4.
For the last couple days my steering has been making a squeaking noise… but not at the pump or the belt, sounded like it was coming from the steering wheel. Steering hasn’t felt great lately, but I thought it was the wind (60mph+ lately).
Today I start it, and let it warm up as I load the generator in the back of the truck, and I hear a rattle type noise. Pop the hood, and it sounds like there is a bearing going in the PS pump…
Does this happen? I’m almost afraid to drive it, in fear of throwing the belt…
A refurb pump is like $65 (unless someone on here can do better) and a new serp belt is like $27 (same)

Tried taking the belt off the see how much play there was on the pump bearing? Other pulley bearings?
As for “does it happen”. It’s a Ford. My experience with Fords is that everything can break. A lot of it will. I still love my Expedition though.

If the bearing on the pulley is going bad, you dont need the whole pump, just the pulley. NAPA part number 7-3085.

This was always my GM experience 😛 Fords were known for groany PS pumps. How’s that fluid smell?

why would the smell of the fluid matter?
