# PS3 40g owners......

just found that out too, which makes me wonder if I put this into an external hard drive enclosure if I can access the data files like a USB flash drive :ponder
The HD is made by hitachi and is a standard laptop sized SATA unit, however has some proprietary type of connection(flat blade-like socket versus standard pins)

Theres a tray there that comes out, and the HDD latches into, then pushes back into the unit. And as far as I know, any laptop drive will work. The only limit is that the PS3 reads the HDD at 5400rpm, so any higher rated hard drive is a waste. There is a 1tb 5400rpm HDD on newegg IIRC for like $90, thats what I plan on doing to mine, mainly for shits and giggles.

Ah didn’t notice that. Good tip. I figured the HD case was an integral part of it. I’m going to go buy an external drive case tomorrow then and see if I can transfer the data via USB

You can just grab a SATA to USB kit, much cheaper, espically if your not going to permantly have it out.

I just picked up a SATA external 2.5 case w/ USB 2.0 cable off Ebay for $8.95 shipped. Sometimes that place has its perks…
Oh and I think it’s staying out permanently. I gave it another shot at fixing the issue tonight and it just beep and shit down after 15 seconds. It’s not giving me the yellow LED of front(YLOD), just saying it’s running hot and going south.
there might be a video on youtube soon of some jackass backing over a PS3 with a 10 ton wrecker in his driveway

I believe with the xbox 360 the hard drive has boot sector data that makes it only work with the xbox. People can ghost the drive to a normal hard drive but there is some work to copy all the data and these boot/hidden sectors. It’s probably the same way with PS3.

sounds like a SATA…
and pins dont seem to be standard anymore (IDE)… everything ive seen now a days uses SATA much faster :thumbup

to say the least. heatsink not making full flat contact with the chip. the AS5 is barely disturbed on the one side(smooth) while the other you can clearly see was making good contact due to the peaked nature of the film when I separated the heatsink module from the board

:number1:number1:number1 Success in recovering my data!
After isolating the fact that the heatsink was not touching the chipset 100% I foleded the tray and added shims to add extra pressure(I know bad bad bad) to the board so it pressed the chipset into the sinks further. that, coupled with a big hole cut in the internal plastic casing and direct force fed AC(PS3 inlet duct jammed against AC on top of couch/pillows) I ahve managed to keep this junk shit running long enough to offload the data files to a flash drive and copy them to my PC.
Now if this thing fails again, I can rest much easier when I tie it up and drag the bitch down the road behind the rig from ballaston spa to the shop tomorrow :eek3

There isn’t going to be much left when I get done later today.
Damn thing started “overheating” again, then stopped reading disks, then it would even give me my damn disk back! After 5 minutes of dicking around with the shitbox I ripped it from it’s location and threw it out the backdoor into the driveway. Few minutes later I brought it back inside and disassembled it w/o using a screwdriver. Needless to say, I got my fucking game disk back.
Big pile o shit sitting on the passengerflorr of the truck at the moment.
Just fucking fed up with the thing.
