On his defense he has offered to pay and I said if the police or renters insurance does not find/pay for it we will go halfs.

stupid american mentality… if ure very good friends with someone and let them borrow something ure the asshole for demanding payment of item if lost.stolen!!! friends offer to payback/payhalf or figure out a friendly way to be even…not demand payment/accountability of such item…
