# question about lug nuts

This girl in my class has a 2nd gen dsm she just bought this past year. It came with rims with summer tires on it, and another set of rims with winter tires. She says the guy she bought the car from says she needs different lug nuts for these other rims because they are a different metal. I know dissimilar metals will corrode and fuse. But does she really need them? or would some anti seize on the studs work?

she may need other lug nuts depending on the make of the wheel. Some wheels have deep holes, whereas factory holes are flatter. If you use the flatter stock lugs, there wont be as tight a grip, and they could loosen…

if they are really nice rims then spend the lousy 25 bucks on lug nuts. Certain metal combinations will corrode. You do not want to put antiseize on lug nut faces and threads. They may loosen. Threads alone maybe but then that doesnt solve the lug to rim contact issue. The NEED to be in contact. Buy the lugs.

lug nuts arent so much “wheel material” specific, they ARE seating surface specific, but its not the best idea to use uncoated steel lugs on a alloy wheel … the rust will wreck the seating surface eventualy
3 types of lugs:
straight cut w/ a washer
90 degree
60 degree

some wheels also require a spline drive or tuner lug because the holes are too small for a regular NUT
