im looking to buy a 13 foot kayak and my bed in my truck is 6.5 feet so turned diagnol that would leave 6 feet hanging out the back, is this legal? ---

It is “legal,” you just have to secure it and then hang a red flag on the end of it to make it noticeable (just in case some dumbass behind you doesn’t notice the big ass kayak in the first place). At least this is how it works for lumber and such. ---

yeah i knew that with construction materials, just didnt know if it maybe different with a watercraft, i guess it should be ok with the red flag ---

Close the tailgate and let the extra lenght hang over the cab? Then strap it? ---

wrong…maximum you are allowed to exceed is 18" from the rear WITH a red flag. ---

I always just put my 17’ kayak and/or 17’ canoe on top of my pickup. I built a wooden A frame (kinda like a saw horse) that sits in the bed and holds the canoe at roof height. I have a 93 Nissan pickup. D21 extended cab. Some sticks out over the front, some out over the back. I mainly take short trips of less than 5 miles to where I put in and haven’t been hassled. ---

I have been followed by police with at least 5 feet of wood sticking out the back of my truck before. Put the flag on and haul away.
