hey… did you ever get 3ds max figured out? I just found out how to use max’s default shaders/materials (the good ones)… the raytrace ones are especially killer if your going for a photorealistic look.

If you want to know how to get them, open the material browser, click on the icon “get material”… then check the radio button “material library” and click open… there should be about 8 or 9 different setups (raytrace 1 & 2, wood, ground, walls, glass, ect)

the great thing about it is it already has all the maps and variables set for bump mapping, specular maps, displacement maps, ect… I’ll post a pic of something I did real quick with them later
