# Removing rusted bolts, with the heads cut off :D

any good way to do this? the catback bolts needed to be cut off but they’re still stuck in the flange.

heat em up with a torch, or try PB blaster penetrating oil

PB didn’t cut it, I let the bolts sit over night too :dunno:. it worked the first time I undid the exhaust but not this time.
bigblock - I could drive up but the catback would still be sitting in my driveway 😃
haven’t tried the torch yet…

Torch is about the only way youll be getting it out.

on your car the catback is real easy to remove. take it off and then bring it up.

yeah it wasn’t hard at all(except for the dremeling the bolts off part), unfortunately I’ve got no way of transporting it
The flange is threaded, so I’m just gonna drill it out and use a nut & bolt combo to reconnect it

edit - anyone wanna tell me the legality issues of running an open downpipe?
I’ve still gotta get some new gaskets
edit again - and this is really making me think about getting a cutout, I love how loud it is but I’m sure it’d get annoying at certain times.
bigblock, can you weld stainless? that’s what my current downpipe is. There’s definitely room before the cat to fit one. :naughty:

i can weld stainless, but why not build a downpipe without cat and u-bend. you will be surprised. let me know

Comments:
I’ve found that “PB Blaster” and all that stuff is basically worthless compared to an el cheapo propane torch. Nothing loosens stuck bolts like heat.
As for using a nut and bolt to hold your exhaust on, my mid-pipe has been connected to my headers via nuts and bolts for almost two years now and it’s 100% fine. Use some Lok-tite and they’ll be just fine.
My headerflange studs were SO rusty and in such a bad location that heating the nut for removal was not an option, so I had to cut them and then drill out the holes.

yeah, screw the cutout idea, this aint a race car. And for the first time ever napa was useful today. I got the gasket I needed and can bolt the exhaust back up in time for monday
in about an hour I’m gonna start drilling the old bolts out. Got some new ones, nuts and lock washers.

all bolted up now, no more looking at rusted ass mufflers from the back
atleast for a month
lol if you look at the flange you can see the old bolts still there, man what a bitch that was drilling them out
