I’m just wondering why people sometimes rev their N/A engines before shutting them off. I’ve heard that this sprays extra gas into the cylinder and “washes” away the oil along the cylinder wall which can lead to damage. If this is true then why do people do it anyways?

I believe it was with the old cars to get a little extra gas up front since they were so hard to start

on a properly fuel injected car this is pointless and probably detrimental

umm actually the reving before shutting down is a old fighter pilot thing, before they would shut off those 12 cylinder beasts they would rev it to get all the crap out of the cylinders tp keep em clean when sitting.

why people do it on their cars i dunno, but it does help when u have a turbo car since you push cooler oil to the turbo before shut down.

negative… when you rev your car = heat generated… duh… heats up the oil as well… then shut off = bam! hotter turbo
**BAKING** up the oil…

if you do that to your turboed car… except it to not last that long…
that’s why people use turbo timers…

you don’t see turbo timers rev up for you now do you?
best lowered temperature is idle… 1-2 mins or more…

I believe it’s actually specified in the FSM or owner’s manual to refrain from “revving the engine up unnecessarily immediately after start up or just prior to shutdown”.

I certainly wouldn’t do it.

Thanks for the info guys! The “riceritis” seems like the main cause, lol. 😛
