# Right of way quiz

Car A reaches the stop sign and is turning left. There is traffic going both directions that does not have a stop sign so car A cannot proceed until it’s clear.
While car A is waiting for an opening in traffic to complete the left turn car B approaches the stop sign from the opposite direction and is turning right. Car B also has to wait for traffic to clear to make the right turn.
The traffic clears and it is now safe for both vehicles A and B to complete their turns. Who goes first and has the right of way? Vehicle A because he arrived first or vehicle B because he’s making a right turn while vehicle A is making a left turn?

Easy, vehicle B has the right of way. Neither are at a stop sign, stop signs have eight sides. Why did vehicle A stop, he should grow a pair.
My real answer is the driver with the most confidence will earn the right of way in this situation.

Let’s just say hypothetically the East-West road rhymes with West Klien and the North-South Road rhymes with Ranch Trail and someone I know runs into this situation at least once a week going to work. I was in the car A camp but with how many times car B has felt they had the right of way I’m now no longer sure. I tried looking it up but most of the stuff I could find was about reaching the intersection at the same time or 4 way stop signs.

Yeah I can’t find any reputable scenario or rule on this, but it’s whoever arrives first at the stop sign has the right of way. Now if traffic was going both ways and Car B has a clearing to turn right, while Car A cannot proceed, then I’d expect Car B to make the right turn.

allowing the person who got there first regardless of turning direction is just a common courtesy. The last time I took a safe driver course the instructor specifically said people turning left really have no right of way in any situation. Stop sign or not…so I voted B…thjs is assuming both cars have come to a complete stop for a recommended amount of time

I think when he asked the question most people said an answer close to choice A…including myself at the time. Then there is always the situation of a 4 way stop all arriving at the same time too…Jay you opened a can o worms

The way I see it; If not for having to wait for traffic to clear, the obvious answer is A. Since both are sitting and waiting for traffic to clear you should probably ignore the “I got here first” rule and the order of precedence would go to the car making the right turn.

This is easy for me. I trust no drivers on the road and I’m generally not in a huge hurry. If I’m A or B, I’m letting the other car go first, so that I could proceed without having to worry that some jackwagon is going to sideswipe me or wave me on and then decide to go anyways…
I know this doesn’t answer your original question, but that’s my solution.

But in this case it’s not “about the same time”. Car A is there waiting to turn long before car B approaches.
I think having to wait for the traffic negates the whole “got there first” part though and B ends up with the right of way.
The fact that no one here seems to know for sure makes me feel better for the constant confusion when I run into this situation all the time.

That’s kind of what I was mentioning in my original reply. If car B can make the right hand turn before Car A can make the left hand turn, then Car B should proceed first. From what I’m reading and seeing the “Car arrived first” rule is the correct one if both can proceed.

In a perfect world, yes. I think they are a perfect solution to every intersection…except somehow NOBODY knows how to use them.
