Co-ops are not internships, they are paid. Also large percentage of students get the job with the place they co-oped for.

Nope, and it’s not hanging on the wall because the degree was just a piece of paper to me… therefore my degree is in a box in the closet, because my knowledge and experience speak for me, not some piece of paper anyone with 1/2 a brain, plenty of time, and enough $$ can earn.

It isn’t that UB doesn’t place significance on them, they just don’t force you to do it. If you go to school there, do well, and interact I can guarantee you you’d get an internship.
The thing about UB isn’t that it is any less of a college, it is that you have to make the college work for you. There isn’t anyone there forcing anything on you. If you need help, you better go talk to your professor about it. If you want an internship you better talk to your professors about that. You have to do things for yourself, which is a lot more real world in my eyes.

Awh wasn’t aware of that. I know UB offers Race Car Vehicle Dynamics 1 & 2, that was a killer cool class.

That is the biggest thing about life in general. Being able to wake up, setting a goal and meeting it. Can’t talk to people? Cry about it, then stop and learn how to. Be successful, do cry about not being, do all you can to be.
As far as being 23 and seeing others with envy, don’t. Chalk it up as a learning experience. If you want something different out of life, do what you need to, to make it happen. If you hate you $12 an hour job, move in with a bunch of friends, and slip up rent. Minimize your spending, and focus on going back to school. Looking into aid and whatnot, call schools and talk to them about it. See what everyone has to offer, then make an educated decision on what would be best for you. Then follow through, work hard, and live happy! :headbang:

as for my job. it allows me to go to school full time, so its not that bad. I just see all the scum bags I went to HS with and it gets to me. I need to get out of here asap. lol
And yea, it doesnt bother me too much to see my friends doing well because I do have that experience and prior degree, I just wish I could keep it relevant to my future degree. but who knows, maybe it will…
and my rent is only 175 a month before winter heat bills come in… I just want to be able to totally focus on school, not really having to worry about working shit ton. I will be debt free besides school loans and my car payment by june so that will help

This is how every school works, and while RIT may require you to coop you still have to work for it. It’s part of the curriculum but it’s not like you can sit there and do nothing while they plop you into some cushy internship.

I did not read through all 5 pages…I am sure a lot of useful information was presented. I have one piece of advice. Please, do not settle on a college because that is where your Girlfriend is going.
I am sure you 2 are madly in love and you want to spend time together…that is all the more reason why **you** need to choose what is best for **you**.
You stated you wanted to go to RIT just because. To me that is more than enough reason to go there. You sound interested.
If you say you want to go to UB because your G/F is going there…again don’t take it the wrong way but…think it through. Don’t waste an opportunity like college on puppy-love.
I personally went to Buff. State. I love the school, the program, and the summer sessions when the girls sun bath outside the lawn of the Tech. Building. But, I did loose my Girlfriend at the time due to some dude that went to her school being around her more than me. All-in-all I am glad I got a degree that I wanted at a school I was comfortable with. I am actually still going there now…for my Master’s. I may have a tainted perspective as I got the short end of the straw on the relationship deal. However, hearing the G/F come out with respect to your decision as to what school to check out just urked me.
Just trying to give you insight. Good Luck. If I misinterpreted something then I apologize.
I applied to R.I.T. and got accepted but decided not to go. UB, I went to an orientation with a friend of mine because they wanted to apply there but I didn’t like it. I just did not like the atmosphere and the attitude. They are great schools. Just not for me. Buff State was my choice.

UB has a great internship/co-op program. I went through it, and have been a guest speaker in it several times. I asked Dean Millar once why they do not make it mandatory. It is optional by design. The program is better because the only students in it were proactive enough to choose to enroll. I guess you could say that “No child left behind” doesn’t apply in the real world, or in this program.
If you go to UB do this program. It doesn’t guarantee you an internship, but they do everything they can to help you find one. The seminars and workshops help you apply your book learnings to the real world.

Also, it is worth mentioning that UB is affiliated with MANY local employers. They have a website dedicated to listing job/internship opportunities. They even do on-campus interviews with the companies.
Like Fry said, just because it isn’t mandatory, doesn’t mean it’s non-existent.

A few things on what you said. I am not picking UB because she is picking UB, if she was going to buff state or daemen I would still pick UB. I am just trying to be in the general area.
UB was never an option because I have always been based in Rochester. Thats why I created this thread I guess. I wanted to make sure I will be happy with my decision if/when we break up.
The more and more I go to Buffalo I start to think “yea I can see myself here.” Rochester is just my comfort zone; I know my way around, I have a few friends there, etc.
And again, I have no idea what is best for me. I suppose one never knows the cost of choices not made…

honestly, in the end, it won’t matter which degree you have(UB vs RIT). When you go job hunting, they won’t really care too much about whether or not you got a 3.0 at UB or a 3.0 at RIT(assuming the same degree). You will still end up landing A JOB as an engineer. So go where you want to go, make the best of it(internships and what not), and have fun.
I prefer UB because of cost, social life, and bigger/better city.
