most cruises go to port. which you will need to present your passport to the cruise company for.
and then when you come back, you will go through US customs.

i’m going to call the cruise company and someone from work who’s in charge of this and find out what exactly is required. now i’m hearing there’s issues if you are under 25 and going on these by yourself.

everyone says that they take a while but i needed one in January…and I waited til almost the last minute to get it… they dont take 3 months… but i would deff. have it expedited just in case 🙂

at work we expedite passports all the time for people leaving the country to go overseas.
Its about $300-$350 to get this done and can be done in as little as 24 hours… depends how bad you want it.

You can go to Philly or Boston where they do the actual processing and get it that day. You need to make an appointment though.
I work for the P.O., we’re expecting a 3 month wait for non-expedited passports. Knock roughly a month off of that to expedite, and if you overnight it there and back, about another month. People who are doing it that way are telling us 3-4 weeks is about the norm, and it’s roughly $200 to do it that way.
Your other option is to find out where you’re going to. A lot of the Caribbean Islands and cruises in that area will accept documentation that you applied for a passport, not the physical passport itself. I’ll try to find the list of countries you can travel to with just proof of application, and the website where you can go to get all of the information and documentation.

I work for Citi, we are doing the data processing for the DoS for the passports.
The backlog is at the DoS, not on our end at all.
A supervisor was telling me that rich and famous people go directly to the LA passport facility and can get same day service on a passport.
I have no idea what that costs, might want to call them and see if they offer it anywhere else.

I just went on a cruise to the bahamas. you do not need a passport for travel by sea or land until 08. i didnt have a passport. i drove to jax port, got on the boat with my ID and birth certificate. Birth certificate must have NYS or whatever state seal stamped on it

i don’t think it’s worth that kind of trouble. i’m going to be contacting the cruise line tonight or tomorrow morning to find more details about what will be required.

that’s what people are telling me. the people i talked to that have been on these cruises are either saying they needed it or that that their birth certificate/drivers license was sufficient. everyone says something different. it’s rather frustrating. i’m getting on in ft. lauderdale and i don’t think we get off again until we get back so i don’t see why i would need one.
that is, assuming i am able to go.

it was myself and 4 others, none of us had 1. when we got off the boat, customs just asked for our ID, birth certificate and customs declaration form. thats ALL
call the cruise lines to confirm so you know whats going on. it didnt make things any faster or slower if we had or didnt have a passport too. not like there was separate lines or anything. first come first serve. this was on carnival by the way
