Looking to ditch the pickup (2008 Sierra) and grab a new daily commuter and everyone seems to be happy with these cars. (Plus there is a Golf TDI with a hood stack at my work that got my attention) I am not at all familiar with the VW world so any insight would be great. What years with what mileage to stay away from/go for, what mods are typically done. I see from a brief search here that many of you guys used to own them at some point and loved them. i had a 2002 jetta tdi and a 2011 sportswagen, both with manual transmissions. The later had a 6spd which helped with highway mileage, but the 2002 with the 1.9l still got better mileage. I drove my '02 from NY to AZ, from NY to STL I averaged 48 averaging 70mph and from then on I was about 42 mpg (driving at 80-85mph) the newer 2.0 tdi has much more power (the 1.9 was extremely slow) I never really looked into mods, but I know with the newer ones, a straight pipe and re tune will have nice gains ---

Ive owned: 2003 drove from 200-250K 2001 drove from 170-360K 2000 drove from 220-250K 1997 210-300K 1998 250-Back to 0 My parents Drive a 2001 from 170-350 and still going My brother inlaw 2011 28K-110 2000 170-220 My inlaws 2003 150-200 My 01 Had a VNT17/22, PP520 injectors, my own custom tune, Single mass, stage 3 clutch, 1.8t axles, intake, 3" straight pipe, EGR test pipe. put down 400ft/lbs I would stay away from the 04-05 they had the most issues. the ALH 99-03 is my favorite, but the earlier 96-98 isnt a bad motor just most shells have roted out. Buy a Pruis. toyota reliablity. great Fuel eco. no power. ---

I want to be able to tow a small trailer loaded with my sled or a couple MX bikes plus gear. I feel like this would do that and get great mileage, most tracks are 1-2 hours away. I don’t have any fuel efficient options for road trips, which sucks, and I have racked up 50k on my truck in 2 years. Hauled a trailer about 10 times, often times for other people. What type of major maintenance do the 99-03 require? What about the 06+ models? Definitely want a 6spd manual car. ---

I towed an open 2 place snowmobile trailer with two snowmobiles, gear, and two adults in the vehicle, all throughout the Pacific North West… the car had plenty of power and handled mountain passes with EASE. ---

I will probably shoot for a 2011-2014 6mt. These are so cheap compared to pickups. ---

i just came in to say that I have owned 2 ALH tdi’s (99.5-03) and ive loved them. tune + nozzles will net you around 140-150hp and 250-270 ft/lbs and youll get around 45mpg ---

I was poking around a few weeks ago and I saw no “deals” the Golf TDi platform is still the same price if not MORE expensive than a same year GTi ---

KBB was reporting a 13% decline in prices immediately after the news came out, but I read another article recently that said there didn’t seem to be any drop in prices in the secondary market. I’ve put 15K miles on my 2010 JSW since April, and I’ve really enjoyed driving it. I’ll probably be adding a hitch soon. I think it’s rated for up to 2,500 lbs. I emailed VW to “register” with them regarding the emission issue, and they sent me information on outstanding recalls and the extended warranty. HPFP and Exhaust Valve are now covered until 120K or the year 2020. The only problem I’ve had is the stereo failing, but I was debating upgrading to an android auto compatible head unit anyway. ---

So I assume deleting the DPF system will void the HPFP warranty? ---

I don’t see why it would, but I don’t think you’ll pass NYS inspection with a DPF delete. ---
