i think what they are getting at is that you don’t fire warning shots. it’s nonsense, you’re not gonna have a stand off with a burglar and fire a warning shot near his feet to get him to leave.
you either shoot at him or you don’t shoot at all.

You should not have a handgun… especially from what you’ve posted.
There are no warning shots, there is no stalking someone through the house. If you point a gun at someone you better be prepared to kill the motherfucker without skipping a heartbeat. THAT is what a gun in the house is for.
If you discharge the gun “as a warning shot”, YOU will be arrested for unlawful discharge of a firearm in a residential area. If you shoot and don’t kill the person, expect to be sued to the point of not having ANYTHING anymore.
My Home Defense setup:
1. Dogs, 2 of them… one a pack/semi-wild breed who freaks when anyone is around she doesn’t know.
2. Remington 870 12Ga with a pistol grip full of 00 Buck.
3. XDm 40 loaded with hydra-shock in the bedside table.

Amen, except the warning shot. Announce you have a gun, preferably loud enough that they can hear it on the 911 tape. After that if they keep coming only hesitate long enough to be sure it’s not a friend/relative before shooting at center mass.
Fry, please drop it. The guy is looking for gun advice, not advice about why he doesn’t need a gun.

OK, well then I will concede to that I need to take a home defense course… I DID mention that I will be taking a CCW course, at which I assume they will teach guidelines for discharging a weapon.
Frankly, I didn’t post this thread to discuss how to tactically defend myself. I stated pretty fucking clearly that I have never shot/owned/been around a gun. I am NOT going to go buy a gun tomorrow. I am planning to seek education and range experience before even considering bringning one home.
My question was what should I be renting/trying/borrowing. Looking for general direction.
I’ll cover the rest as I see fit, and as I am comfortable.
I appreciate the guidelines so far on noting that 9mm ammo is inexpensive, that’s good to know. We’ve established that the .22 is great for target practice and wife duty but not sufficient for taking down an intruder. We’ve established that the .380 is more of a carry weapon and makes other sacrifices for that.

You are free to do whatever you want. Maybe it’s just me, but the only “warning” anyone will see when they break into my house is the muzzle flash followed by a piece of lead.
I was just thinking too… Taurus makes a nice 9mm that is cheap and worth checking out. Super comfortable in my hands.

^ You mention keeping it secure with a family. That’s what I have in my nightstand drawer. Gun is kept loaded without a round in the chamber. The backup key is kept at my office to guarantee my kid can’t accidentally find the key around the house and go looking for what it opens.

Thanks, was looking at some similar safes … Definitely in the night stand drawer or under the bed would be best. Absolutely won’t bring anything into the house without using a safe. I’d like to be able to use the safe for sensitive paperwork and jewelry as well.

Ok, for starters…
9mm is a general all purpose gun. The actual gun you’ll have to try at ranges and see what you like; what fits your hand best, what is most comfortable, price range, etc.
I bought a 40 because I wanted something with a little more knock-down power than a 9, but didn’t want a full 45 (Mainly because the mini-frame 45 I wanted/liked was outside my budget by quite a bit)
I like the XDm setup; I’ve never had an issue with mine; so that’d be one to try.

Im in the same boat. 2 young kids in my house. Id hate the thought of shooting someone… but i would if they came between me and my wife & kids.
I’d have something like this right next to the bed, and have the wife’s and my finger prints programmed in so that either of us can open. Prolly a Springfeild 1911 (just because i like the look)

i imagine my massive german shepard would have no problem with keeping intruders out of the house, however no matter how big and protective of a dog, they cant do much if the intruder has a gun. i would say if youre concerned about people breaking in where you need to be armed then you need to move.
ive been looking at rifles, but more so for going out back in the field and shooting old barrels and such to have fun for an afternoon, not for protection. OP, :tup: for wanting to go and take the class and educate yourself before actually making a purchase. it scares me the way some people handle firearms.

Just to verify, do you have a hunting and target pistol permit already or no? Just so you’re aware, its illegal in NYS to shoot (possibly even handle, not sure) a pistol without a permit.

Good thing I don’t live in NY State then, huh. Permits aren’t an issue. They are super easy to get here.
