# Setting up a media center..

how difficult would it be to stream movies to my parents house if they had a popcornhour device?

I’m using my old computer (AMDx2 4600+, Radeon 1950xt) as my HTPC.
I was going to use it to record from cable, but decided against it.
I just download everything instead… get it already formatted and what not.
It’s only being used on one TV, but I’d assume more would not be a problem at all for it.
Also use it to as security for behind my apartment, since my car kept getting broken in to.
It’s mainly just the storage center of my main computer… store all torrents, and crap that isn’t needed immediately.
DVI/HDMI cable -\> TV…
Surround sound for speakers.
It’s not quite as easy as the above systems though, since I never bothered with anything fancy.
I just keep torrents/cam feed open on my monitor screen, then whenever I want to watch a movie, I just open home cinema x64, and play it on the TV… so I can still continue to monitor torrent/cam.

Somewhere between very difficult and impossible. 🙂
If you both had really fast connections and the networking experience to set up a wan using the public Internet maybe it would work for low def divx stuff. No way it would work for HD though.

Does the PCH index all the content connected to the drive into one library? I would really prefer that.

yep i have mine spanning 3 drives and all show up as one. you can use a program called link shell extension just drag and click and you have your links.

If im planning on streaming HD, will a Wireless g router be sufficient? I dont want to spend 100 bucks on a router right now… anybody wanna point me to a decent deal that will accomplish what I stated that I was trying to do.? thanks

If you’re a NetFlix user, I’d suggest an LG BD390. Streams via UPnP and also gets you NetFlix Watch Instantly. Super handy.

I doubt ill be buying a bluray player anytime soon… just need a wireless router that can do all this…
i dont have netflix either. :-/

You’re really pushing the limits of wireless when trying to stream 1080p. I know people who get it working but everything has to be perfect. You’re much better having a wired lan between your streaming device at the TV and your computer.
boardjnky4… Win7 made it even easier to have the PCH read multiple sources. It comes with a utility called mklink. Basically you drop down to a command prompt, change directories to where ever your main share is for your jukebox (mine is c:\yamj\shares") and type “mklink Media4 e:\media /j”. Before Win7 you had to use a 3rd party utility to create the junctions.
What that does is create a junction called Media4 inside the shares folder that points to e:\media. You can create as many junctions as you want and the PCH will see everything there. I’ve got 3 different hard drives all being linked via junctions inside that shares folder.

yeah what jay said, i went a different route, using a 3rd party utility, no dos commands, just right click and hit create junction, and done, but both achieve the same thing. I also finally got around to putting an internal drive in my pch, that open up a whole other list of things you can do with the pch.
