It’s not his job to express his opinion, it’s his job to issue marriage licenses according to the limits of marriage laws in his area. He can go have his own opinion at his new job. ---

Is it possible the couple knew this is how the JP would respond, and they went there anyway? Why do these people feel the need to make an example of this man? Was he truly wrong? Did he tell them they are going to hell? He just said he doesn’t want to do it. What is wrong with that? It isn’t clear that marrying people is an _obligation_ for a Justice of the Peace under the law. The law may simply grant him the ability to marry people. This would be similar to pastors. In most states, the law grants them the ability to marry people, but they are free to choose the couples they marry - they have no obligation to do so. ---
