# snowboard stance. Does anyone ride a forward stance anymore?

Most people i know seem to ride duck now, and also the consensus on forums. I tried it and for me, i can’t carve worth a crap. I don’t hit the park so i see no need for it. i ride +21/+6. What do you guys ride as far as stance? Is everyone just a park rat these days?

I rode a forward stance last time I went. Not sure how I feel about it. I was 12/6
I think I will go back to a duck stance. It’s not that I am a park rat, but I do like to lift off on small kickers and little stuff on the sides of the trails and doing some little spins as well as manuals and stuff. I think riding duck makes that crap easier.

Your stance is all about personal comfort, and EVERYONE will have a different setup. Ride what you feel is comfy.
Personally I am 21 up front and -12 in the back, with a very wide stance.

i tried 21/-6 last time out, with a 23 inch stance width. Felt ok, but i just couldn’t get in to that turn like i can at 21/6. Didn’t think there would be that big a difference… but i guess i was wrong.

i ride what you would call pigeon toed. 18/-18 i like it because it allows you to turn and ride switch without your feet being any different besides the way your facing. if you face one way more than anything, when you turn and ride switch, you may end up having a hard time with it, due to your fee pointing up the hill and none pointing down, so you will need to turn your body a little awkward.

try some shit out, you’ll find what works eventually.

I was riding a 15/6 for a long time; then went to a 15/-6; I like the 15/-6 better (It let me ride fakey better) but it had some bad side-effects… (In regards to my fucked up knee being really pissed off)
I think I’m going back to the 15/6 because my bad knee got really sore and tired quickly with it at -6.

That’s an interesting one. Have you personally noticed better control and turning with that those angles as compared to a lesser forward stance or is it just a personal preference/comfort thing?

keep in mind, you’re use to doing one way, you’re now changing your stance and making yourself feel very uncomfortable. it will take time to get use to riding that way.

That stance is more of a racing stance I guess you could say… No switch, just tuck and BURN.

Since i mostly freeride now i started riding forward this year. I’m not really feeling it, I think a mild duck stance give me more control.

it’s ok to ride a forward stance, no reason not to if that’s whats comfortable to you.
I’d been riding that way for years but switched to duck last year. I like it a lot better, feels so much more like skateboarding. However it does tweak your back knee, as your knees aren’t bending in the same direction like when you have a forward stance. Also, it’s much more of a workout for your quads riding duck

Much better control while carving for me. I started using this stance when I was running Boardercross several years ago and have always kept it. I do not advise it for anyone running switch or spending time in the park.

I’m on 15, -9 and ride a ton of park.
I’ll have to disagree with the tweaking of the back knee… If you’re riding parallel with your board (the correct way) and letting the mountain do all the work, it should reduce that tweaked feeling. It’s uncomfortable because ppl think they need to face forward while riding a snowboard.
As for the wide stance, that was a fad I hope to see go away… Most kids on boards these days are set up incorrectly… All these kids now put their bindings all the way out thinking it will help their riding by dragging their sack in the snow, or “lowering your center of gravity.” I rode a super wide stance (23) and brought it in 2 inches to 21, and my riding greatly improved. Plus, it made my duck stance more comfy. “Technically,” you should set your binding width about an inch out from your shoulder width.
Play around with your settings, it’s just 4 (3 on burton) screws holding your binders down.
edit: I couldn’t imagine that anything 18+, 6+ or more, can do anything to improve your riding. Better off skiing. Not being biased, just have plenty of experience with equipment and physics of the sport.
