I think I am one that is going to upgrade very soon. The OS is wicked. Windows Ultimate has MediaCenter functions and just looks wicked. I also like the way MS allows to add physical memory by inserting memory sticks…cool feature. Services are also haulted while system is being used by enduser… ---

I would not upgrade until you HAVE to. I’ve used Vista for about 2 months now and there are a bunch of things that are a big change. First and formost, if you do not have Vista compliant hardware, don’t bother. My notebook which I have Vista installed on has a few gotcha’s with compatible hardware. Sure Vista runs on it but not as well as it could. Secondly, the software available these days does not like Vista too well. I don’t know if there is any compliant AV software for Vista yet and so on. Todays games run slower on Vista, about 10% on average since Vista is designed on DirectX 10 and most of the games out today (if not all) are only DX9. Vista also has a much more integrated indexing function which can bring a questionable system to its knees. The thing about Vista, they made it more user friend for n00bs and more secure by limiting what users can and can’t do. By default even if you have administrator rights to the machine you can’t write to the root of C: drive unless you take ownership of it. You also cannot edit the shortcuts in the start menu, they must be deleted and re-created to do that. These are just little things that I’ve noticed while using it. That being said, AERO glass looks very attractive, it’s probably one of the best looking GUI’s I’ve ever seen. To get the full Vista experience you are going to have to pay for it with compliant LCD monitors, peripherals and so forth as I see you are interested in the Utlimate edition. Wait a year and then give it a try is my suggestion to you. ---

I’ve been using it (the beta and the leaked version) for about a year or so now and I have no real complaints except for 3rd party support (which is understandable considering it’s not even offically released to the public yet) which is getting better as time goes on. my old tired amd 64 runs it great… although I’m keeping this one as an XP machine… the core 2 will be getting vista > This coming from the Mac lover/humper. HAHAHAHHA 🤣 Oh the irony… 😉 fuck off. nothing i’ve seen on vista looks to be that great unless you get off on pretty GUI’s. i personally don’t think apple has that pretty of a GUI. vista’s GUI is better looking IMO. i’m reserving final judgment on vista until it’s been released for a bit, but nothing i’ve seen so far from it has really impressed me. all the trainings i’ve done on it have just stressed the a “smoother interface for ease of use”. the only validity to your statement is the fact that macs cost a lot of money. i agree. i’ve never owned a brand new one in my life. i’m out of my league though. i’m not about to get into a windows argument with PC geniuses. i’m just saying my point of view from what i’ve seen so far. ---

I beta tested Vista and have been running the retail release of Vista since mid-November and with the sole exception of VPN software, I really haven’t found any applications that do not run well under Vista. I have a rather average machine as well (athlon64 3000+, 2GB RAM, 150GB HD, GeForce 6800GT 256MB) and it runs everything I ask it to with flying colors. I’ve played Half Life 2 on my machine and it really isn’t bad at all. I expect performance to improve once nVidia releases a true Vista driver (hopefully next week). Now if Cisco and Nortel would make a Vista compatable VPN client I’d be really happy. ---
