That would sound nuts, and the body twisting as he is just sitting there.

Nice.

LS1 is very tall, very wide, but can make brutal power in the right hands. With turbos these things will hit over 1,000hp.

For a lot less dosh, granted you would lose the jaw drop of fuel injection, but a small block Dodge or Ford would fit way nicer, for a lot cheaper, and make easy power.

360 ci = 300hp out of the box, 400+ with bolt ons, over 500lb-ft.

318 ci = 275 hp out of the box (for the carby) will wind out to 7,000rpm with mild upgrades, easy to make 400hp out of.

The Dodges would be my 1st choice cause a) I bleed Mopar blue b) the small blocks had many different orientations for the oil pan. Trucks had the sump at the front, cars at the rear. Brand new of either is about $30 from Canadian Tire.

302 ci = harder to make power out of, don’t really wind out, but cheap and plentiful, bolt on parts are next to free. 5 speeds are very easy to find.

Plus, hot rodders have been stuffing V8s where they don’t belong for so long, that there’s off-the-shelf street rod block hugger headers for pretty much every application. Low deck manifold etc.

Hell, you could get a Richmond 6 or 7 speed tranny for either.

We’re talking at worst 100-lbs difference in weight, and the V8 will sit wherever you want it to. The KADE is about the same size as a V8 to begin with. Overhead Valve pushrod engines are nowhere near as wide as DOHC I4s or V6s.

Sure, you could spend all the extra money on an LS1 or a Lexus V8, but why bother? You can make more than enough horsepower out of a 318.

For not much $$ we got a 318 Dak into the 13s. Imagine that same motor in a 240?

Only 100lbs difference? I dunnno… the KA isn’t a lightweight by any means but aren’t the Mopar engines you mentioned all iron as well? The only reason I could argue for going GM LS series over any other smallblock would be the weight savings you get from all-aluminum construction. And as I’m sure you know, the LS1 also came in a variety of cars with differently configured accessories and differently shaped oil pans. And there’s always the aftermarket.

An f-body LS1 can be had for fairly cheap ($2000 or so with the 4L60E), although I guess that’s still pretty expensive compared to a 318 or 360 which anyone can find in practically any Jeep ever made for dirt cheap.

I was simply under the impression that the weight difference between an LS motor and a Mopar 318/360 was greater than you’re makin it out to be.

Pshaw

Now THAT’s what you put in a 280.

Big Block … yum.

I don’t know how often this has to be repeated.

Aluminum engines are really not that much lighter than iron.

Iron is much stronger, so you don’t need to use as much, and the motor is not aluminum, it is an aluminum alloy.

It’ll also probably amaze you that that the SW20 MR2 or S14, or R32 all weigh about the same as the small block e-body Challenger, but are much smaller. That had a V8. My Cougar is _lighter_ than the S13/14, but also has a V8.

LS1s are expensive, and not very light. Marvels of technology, and can make tons of power and by all means, if you want to put in something, by all means. But you need to constantly battle engine management ($$$) as well.

For ease, a carb engine would need 3 wires routed to run and drive.

Mopar engines are small by comparison, well, the 318 is. The 360 is a bit more of a piggie.

Small light cars with small V8s … hmm. That sounds vaguely familiar. Maybe someone thought of this before? Maybe they even had tons of motorsports wins, and reigned supreme as the fastest production car for almost 30 years?

Oh wait, they did.
