oh noes, not this shit. the original artist who actually painted the star wars version is barely mentioned anywhere, while this clown who took some free software, and set it to work for two weeks gets a ton of attention all over the interwebz. he didn’t do much of any manual work on it, it’s computer-generated. ---

it’s incredibly hard for people of our age to relate, but at the time (when our parents were our age) no other movie had the effects that star wars did. It was truly revolutionary. …but that is still no excuse to obsess over it. ---

Very impressive it even retains the feel of the sfumato, that said I think Da Vinci just rolled over in his grave! ---

RTFA He spent 25-30 hours touching it up by hand. And he came up with the algorithm the software uses. If you didn’t know, algorithms of this nature are not easy to create. ---

> i thought it was pretty neat. digital stuff is art nowadays. hey no doubt, I paint on the computer myself most days, the media is not the point. the point i’m trying to make is, he took [this](http://www.ericdeschamps.com/) guy’s painting, ran it through software, touched it up (whatever that means, i don’t know how you can take images as pixels and place them better than software does) and suddenly it’s a big deal. an equivalent would be me taking a photo, running it through a photoshop “brush strokes” filter, and getting attention as the next John Sargent. i’ve seen images composed of other images in the same way in print and online, and it was never a big deal to anyone. if it was his own painting - whatever, that’s cool. if he composed the whole thing by hand - i’d ask for his autograph and permission to rub his feet. but neither is the case. > but computers make it a LOT easier no, actually they don’t. i’ve never seen anybody who can’t draw in real life being able to draw using a computer. the process itself is a bit simplified since you don’t have to deal with cleaning brushes, keeping paper clean, have the undo/save buttons and such, but in no way any of this will affect your skill level or improve the final outcome. ---

Are your panties twisted? Expert in digital art? No, expert in algorithms and programming? I better be for what I’m paying to go to school. I never said it was easy to paint the original. All I said was what he did was not trivial by any means. Ok, so he modified the algorithm, still no easy task. ---

idk i thought drawing using my tablet was easier because of undo buttons and other effects you can apply to layers and stuff vs actually doing it by hand. thats what i meant by “making it easier”
