My 21st is coming up and my dad said he’d buy me any rifle I want under $400.
What is a rifle that is reliable, fun to shoot, semi-auto, and that I can mount a scope on?

I’d honestly recommend Ruger 10/22. It’s only .22LR, but very fun and CHEAP to shoot.

Yeah I was looking at those but I already have a Marlin .22LR and I’ve gotten quite tired of it. What would you recommend in a bigger caliber? I could always shoot the Marlin if I were trying to save money.

Target practice. I like shooting at around 100 yards and beyond. I haven’t found an AR15 for under $550.
EDIT: Looking at SKS’s now. Good?

Find something bolt action. Dollar per dollar they’re more accurate than comparable SA rifles. The SKS is a grat rifle for the price, but you may be able to find a used remington 700 for the same price and IMO is a better rifle. There are many variants of the rifle, and enough “aftermarket” widgets to keep you happy if you feel like modifying the gun to suit your tastes. If you like shooting long distance, it’s a great start. Decent used for under $300 is easy.
There are accurate semi’s out there but they’re going to cost you(AR’s, BAR’s etc, etc). If you find a good conditon SKS for a good price don’t hesitate to buy if it’s what you like. They are a good gun.

+1 on the remington 700’s. lots of good calibers available…
22-250, .243, .223, .308, .270 and much more to chose from.
if you want a tack driver at long distances for sure need to consider bolt action.
i like thompson center rifles also. i have a .270 thompson center and thing will drive nails. dicks had them for sale a few times, i got mine from my preferred gun shop at 399 new at some point last year.
ebay generally has really good prices on optics. i myself like the nikon stuff. its nice and doesnt kill your wallet. i have a 4.5-14 buckmasters with the BDC reticle and love it. i plan on picking up a nikon monarch soon for an other gun. redfield is an other good scope. ive been told its leupold glass. very affordable scopes.

My dad has a 700 in .308. It’s extremely accurate but, like Cossey said, I’m looking for semi-auto.

Tikka T3 varmint heavy barrel in .243 Apparenlly Berreta only imported them in .223 and 22-50mag, although they’re made in a host of calibers from 22 to 7mm Mag. They make a T3 Lite in .243, but I want the heavier barrel that the varmint offers.
