Oh my. My last jump a few weeks ago when the chute opened the straps weren’t tight tight and the whole rig moved up. My chest mount was on my chin and it scared the shit out of me. But this has to suck big time. ---

Attached or not, that’s going to be a really hard landing, unless he gets back in it, which seems extremely hard, but possible. ---

The hanging even if you were attached removes any control and would take quite a bit of upper body strength to get back into the rig. If you land like hanging, as you said, it will be a pretty hard impact.
