I must be missing something. My argument is based on the thought that KFC is just using an oil that is more unhealthy than other oils. You seem to be arguing that they are knowingly putting a toxin in their food for no reason.

lol if someone is eating kfc everyday for fifty years, then I can see why they need the $$$… shits not cheap.

edit: so what about chocolate? you eat that everyday for X amount of time your bound to end up with some severe heath problems (diabetes?)… should they all be made sugarless? because some people arent smart enough to know that it’s bad for you?

I might agree that a warning would be sufficent (or atleast cover their asses for future incdents)… but getting rid of it all together is a different story. It’s their recipe… if they want to sell it (and people want to buy it) it’s their LEGAL right to do so.

Consumption of trans-fat is a serious health risk. Consumption of bleech is a serious health risk. Smoking is a serious health risk. Look at the side of a pack of smokes “Smoking is dangerous to your health” Look at a bleech bottle “Do not consume”. Look at the side of a food item containing trans-fat " " oh no fucking label…a simple “Consumption of foods like this containing trans-fat can contribute to health problems” would make this potentially class-action case go away.

My question is would you be ok with this law suit if they were not seeking economic damages?

“Partially hydrogenated oils are used extensively in the restaurant business because they have a long shelf life and are well suited for cooking crispy, crunchy foods, said Penny Kris-Etherton, a professor of nutritional sciences at Penn State University. Despite the versatility and pleasing taste of the oils, there is a broad scientific consensus that trans fats are unhealthy, contributing to high cholesterol and heart disease, Kris-Etherton said.”

OMG FRIED CHICKEN IS FATTY! I HAD NO IDEA! I’M SUING!

It’s complete BS that they are attacking a single company to try and make a statement. If they feel that trans fats are a serious enough health risk that there needs to be further labeling in restaurants then they should try to get a law passed, not try to get the attention of the media and thus the public through a lawsuit against a single company. That’s exploitation of our legal system and it needs to stop. It’s not right. It’s not what our legal system is meant to do.

So they can get a law passed and the KFC sues the body that passed the law (state, federal, local) to get the law struck down? Either way this ends in the court, and depending on your view of the trial system it’s advantagous to be either the plaintiff or defendant.

ummmm??? so basically, KFC should be sued because they are making a product that TASTES good because of how they make it. i can see a lawsuit if and only if you ate it once or twice and had to have surgery or died. otherwise, it’s a person’s choice. eat bad everyday, and be unhealthy, and die. consumer error.

if they switched oils, sure it might be healthier, but really HOW MUCH healthier. if someone likes KFC, he’s going to eat it as often (or as randomly) as he likes, so it really won’t have a great effect. and, it would most definitely hurt their business. they shouldnt be forced to deal with such ridiculous lawsuits and/or to change their biz model.

compare to an automobile. buy a car, tire explodes, someone gets hurt, car maker / tire maker gets sued. buy a car, drive tires into the ground, no tread left, tire blows out, no one gets sued. driver error.

everything produced nowadays is damaging to your health one way or another. should everyone and every company in the world be involved in a lawsuit?

and as a side note, this was the first time i read the curb/janny thread, very amusing… idiot females. (lol)

Smoke a pack of cigarettes a year and you wont die from lung cancer brought on by smoking cigarettes, but you still have a warning label on the pack.

Define consumer error…does KFC tell you “Do not eat here every day”? No they don’t, infact they would encourage you to eat there everyday. Does your vehicle owners manual tell you not to drive down your tires until they are bald? Yes, it does.

I knew where Joe would be on this, he thought the McDonalds coffee lady should have received the money.

So according to Joe, as long as there is a healthy alternative, restaurants should be forced to use it. I go to Burger King and ask for a bacon cheeseburger. They give me a cheeseburger because it’s better for me without the bacon. Then next week I get a plain burger, because that’s better for me than a cheeseburger. The week after that I order a bacon cheeseburger and they give me a salad, because in Joe v Burger King it was decided that they can only offer me healthy food.

KFC is frying stuff in oil that isn’t as healthy as other oil. They list their incredients and nutrition info, so it’s up to the consumer to decide if they want to eat there. KFC’s main priority is keeping their signature taste, and feel their consumers would rather have the best possible taste instead of a more healthy meal. If consumers disagree, KFC loses business, and they will in turn switch oils.

The bleech thing couldn’t be farther off point if you tried. That’s like trying to argue that because I know adding bacon to a sandwich is bad for my health that they might as well be adding rat poison. They’re both bad for me right?

Did I say that? No. But if someone is giving you something KNOWING that repeated use will result in health problems, you should be warned about it at the time of purchase. Also nutritional information IS NOT PRINTED DIRECTLY ON THE LABEL OF THE FOOD.

As far as your rat poison senario, lets pretend it take 300 lbs (4800oz) of bacon over your lifetime to kill you and 300mg of rat poison. Now let’s say the average bacon cheese burger has .25 oz of bacon it would take 19,200 servings of bacon to cause you to die. So if BK put .01mg of rat poison in their bacon cheese burgers you wouldn’t care?

And what are the nutrition/ingredient guides doing exactly? They are already there, so if you want to know go read them. No one should be forced to **TELL ME** anything. If I am concerned about it, I should **ASK**. But that’s where left and right disagree. Right stands for personal responsibility, left stands for it always being someone else’s responsibility. It’s what makes discussing things like this with you pointless because our core philosphies will never allow us to agree.

So how about that track day Friday. 🙂

So you don’t think any food you buy at Wegans should have Nuritional Facts or ingredients on it? You think that you should have to call the company and ask for them? Or walk over to customer service and ask for the nutritional facts and ingredients for product X, actually fuck that, you should have to pay the company for them…because shit, they shouldn’t provide you with that information for free, you should really take personal responsibility and get it yourself. Better yet, let’s put the responsibility entirely on you to buy the food, and send it out to a lab to get the information.

On friday, I’ll give you a sandwich…but don’t even think about pressing charges if there’s any dangerous chemicals in it…b/c shit man, you should have looked into that before eating it, since you know I don’t have a legal or moral obligation to NOT attempt to kill you.

“We provide a variety of menu choices and provide nutrition information, including trans fat values, on our website and in our restaurants so consumers can make informed choices before they purchase our products.”

KFC’s nutritional information, is readily available so what’s the lawsuit about? The font wasn’t big enough? There was nobody there reading it to you as you order? You didn’t sign a waiver stating that you have been made aware of the ingredients and willingly are eating something less healthy than something else?

This lawsuit is about the fact that they’re not informing consumers that trans-fat is dangerous to your health. They’re asking that KFC either a) Tell them the food contains it and it is dangerous or b) stop using it

Sorry, re-reading my post I see that was confusing. What I was trying to say is what are the nutrition/ingredient guides not doing that this lawsuit is going to change? Yes, I think the guides should be there. If you’re on one of those dilusional diets and want to know what’s in your 20lb bucket of fried chicken, you should be able to go look it up easily at the restaurant.

However, the cashier should not be forced to say, “Sir, because of the recent court decision, I have to inform you that the chicken is cooked in oils containing trans fat, and that trans fat is bad for you”. If you want to eat healthy, it’s YOUR responsibility to know that trans fats are bad.

I disagree with this. How are you supposed to know? How do you and I know they are bad? Someone told us, it was in the news, we saw a research paper on the internet, etc…What you don’t know (or more likely don’t care about) is that the majority of people aren’t savvy or smart enough to know howto find information online, maybe they don’t watch the nightly news or read newsweek.

What this comes down to is that KFC knows if it informs their customers that the food their eating contains trans-fat and that is dangerous to the consumers health that people might not eat there anymore, and KFC might have to spend more money to cook with better oils.

I think there is a responsibility of people who do know that something is bad to inform those who don’t know.

so if they just state it on a cup or a bag or something, your then cool with it? They should market it so it looks all cool and shit “NOW with even MORE trans-fats”

How are you supposed to know? That’s part of the personal responsibility part that you’ll never be able to understand, because your left wing brain just doesn’t have that function. Error 404, personal responsibility not found.

When I decide to live a healthier life, it is my responsibility to educate myself about what living a healthy life involves. If you want to sue my doctor because I went to him and said, “Doc, I’m getting pretty fat, what should I do?” and he said, “Go eat at KFC, a solid 3 meals a day”, ok, I’ll support that lawsuit. However, it is not the responsibility of a restaurant, especially a restraurant specializing in clearly unhealthy food, to educate me.
