My grandpa Leo was a Gulf War vet on the DD-700 destroyer, he was a gunner on a US battleship involved in the biggest naval fight of all time and shot down three japanese planes himself. When he lived in Baytree, FL the rules were “don’t leave your garage door open.” Well, he fucking loved his 5series bimmer and hated going around to the side door so he left that fucker open. Uncountable threats, complaints, LEGAL THREATS, risk of being kicked out etc and he just left the stupid door open and eventually came up with a compromise (i think it took 6-7 years). He didn’t try to sucker a million online saps into petitioning, he manned up and handled the issue himself. Just sayin’, there’s a lot of war vets with issues and IMO this is one of the weakest ones ever. edit: seriously you guys with saying he should grenade the HOA? And JayS bragging (somewhat smugly) about it being on Fox News? What does that tell you about this stupid ass story? “I want to put my flag in the lawn instead of a few feet over off my porch.” Top news, story at 11. ---

I think its pretty sad to know this guy doesnt have that many years left, and to know that all he did for his country, all that hes seen, and this may be one of the last things in his life… Them trying to have him take down his pole. I think other people that actually give a shit for the reasons, are the ones that are causing the uproar. Its more than some old guy with a flag. This man stared death in the eye and overcame, for the freedoms that this country represents, and if he dies tomorrow, it would be a slap in his face for everything he endured. ---

Its a flagpole, not a rotted out 1992 buick century on blocks with the engine pulled an lying beside it. I just tend to hate small groups that have meaningless and irrelevant rules just to have some control over something. Edit: And no, this doesn’t need to be the top story. ---

Myself and some other members of this board signed up to give you the right to post stupid shit on the internet and live your life the way you want. No im not saying that OMG youre a commie if you dont hate it, but its the fact that the symbol of the country and freedoms you live in and with, cannot be respected enough to let a man that almost gave his life in defense of it that makes it sad. People that brush it off dont see the big picture. No one cares anymore, and shit like this is the reason. No its not the end all because of this story, and America will not fall into the ocean because he couldnt fly his flag on a pole, but the more and more I see shit like this, the more and more I realize that why do I fight to preserve a country for people who dont give a fuck about it. People take too much shit for granted… Talk to Freek or cougarspeed, ask them about shit theyve seen and how good we actually have it. Im not going to argue anymore with you because its pointless. No matter how much I type, youll still be dead set in your ways because your blinders are on. Is it front page news… Maybe not, but its far more important than people brush it off to be. /off my box ---

What you guys don’t get is that he puts up and takes down the flag as he was taught in the military. WITH A FLAGPOLE. Can you fly a flag half mast hanging off the side of your house? NOPE. Can you with a flagpole? Yup. You can bet your sweet ass if this had happened a week after 9/11 not one single person would have had a problem with this. But thats because it made everyone who dind’t give a shit patriotic for a few weeks. ---

I really think theres more to the story than reported… Not saying that all old people are innocent, and that all military people have integrity BUT… This guy is 90 yrs old, things hes seen in his life, things hes done, the way he was raised(talk to any person this old, they have respect and morals that hardly exist anymore)… I just dont see this guy saying fuck you, im going to just not listen to you and do it anyway. Something tells me he was told one thing, and they changed their minds or something else, and then they wanted him to take it down. It just doesnt seem to fit. ---

I am glad he did it anyway the HOA denied a simple request which to me says no matter what the laws are of the united states, HOA are making there own and denied him he had every right to put this flag pole up so good for him ---

I clearly am no medal winner or WWII vet but I did participate in CAP and earned a decent ranking and helped out quite a few police searches, I also go to school full time and have been working since I was 14 - I’m not just a rebellious dick who hates old people. According to the people in this thread and the article, either you support the coln. and are patriotic and all that’s right with this country, or you’re a shithead who hates old people and spits on war vets. People just cannot grasp the concept that its not about the pole, the old guy, the medal or the HOA… Its about the fact that the symbol of this country doesnt mean anything to most anymore. Yes, he can fly it off his house, but why? Why cant he fly it in his yard?? Its the symbol of everything this country stands for, good and bad, and should be displayed proudly. Why does the American flag, the flag of the nation that the same people are bitching about, have to have limitations on how its flown? ---
